Nitra combines urban cultural heritage with museums and outdoor experiences. Options include Nitriansky Castle, museums and the synagogue, as well as marked hiking trails on Zobor and ThermalPark Nitrava in Poľný Kesov. You can choose to focus your trip to Slovakia on culture, hiking or thermal waters.

Castle, city history and distinctive places

Nitriansky Castle is a national cultural monument. Together with the Upper Town on the southern slope of the castle hill, it forms an urban conservation area. Zobor Monastery served as a religious, public-law and cultural centre from the 11th to the 14th century. The two places offer different ways to explore history: the castle is part of a protected urban area, while the monastery has a long history as a centre.

The Church of Dražovce also occupies a striking location: it stands on a limestone spur above the village, within the remains of a prehistoric fortification. Nitra Calvary is also a limestone hill, with a viewpoint overlooking the city. Its south wall is used as a climbing crag and contains the rediscovered limestone cave of Demeter Horváth. Each of these places combines a distinctive landform with a specific cultural or recreational theme.

Another historic building is the manor house in Mojmírovce. It was built in 1721 in the Late Baroque style and redesigned in the Neoclassical style after a fire in 1866. The Mojmírovce Regional Museum is housed in the renovated Letohrádek Aldobrandini, also known as the “small manor house.” From Nitra, the manor house can be reached via Ivanka pri Nitre; it is 14 kilometres from Nitra.

Nitra Synagogue serves as the city’s concert hall. It also houses the permanent exhibition “History and Traditions of the Jews in Nitra.” As the concert programme may change and exhibition details should be checked again before your trip, it is advisable to confirm the latest information before visiting.

Museums offering different perspectives

The Slovak Agricultural Museum’s open-air museum features 33 buildings brought together from across the country. They document rural life in the lowland areas of southern Slovakia. The Ponitrianske Museum focuses on the development of nature and society in the districts of Nitra, Zlaté Moravce and Šaľa. Its themes include archaeology, ethnology, history, natural sciences and numismatics. This brings together a cultural-historical account of rural life and a broader perspective on nature and society.

Alongside educational and religious information, the Diocesan Museum offers an artistic and cultural experience. Check opening arrangements before your visit. This lets you plan the museum as a separate stop without conflating it with collections that have different themes.

Zobor, marked trails and seasonal activities

Mount Zobor has a dense network of marked hiking trails. In winter, it offers opportunities for recreational skiing and sledging, depending on conditions. Marked trails of the Slovak Tourist Club pass through Zobor Monastery. Check the current trail and access conditions before setting out. The monastery grounds also have interactive features for children and an augmented-reality depiction of a monk’s accommodation. Visitor installations may change, so it is also worth checking before your visit.

The marked Cyril and Methodius Route in the Nitra region can be travelled on foot or by bicycle; its route may expand or change over time. Nitra Tourist Information Centre is an information point for this route in Slovakia. If you want to collect route stamps there, confirm on site that it is still an information point. Another hiking destination is the ruins of the Forgáč family castle, accessible from Jelenec, in the Remitáž area. From Kostoľany pod Tribečom, a hike of about 45 minutes along marked trails leads there; trail conditions may change.

Thermal waters in Poľný Kesov

ThermalPark Nitrava in Poľný Kesov offers ten pools with thermal and fresh water. The thermal water is naturally occurring, highly mineralised sodium bicarbonate thermal water. This gives the thermal park a distinct focus alongside the cultural and hiking themes. As operator information may change, check practical access details before your trip.

Compare the locations of the available hotels with these specific destinations rather than choosing based on a theme alone.
