Zbehy: River Landscape, Culture and Cycle Route

Zbehy combines a distinctive riverside location with archaeological traces, ecclesiastical history and a regional cycle route. The village lies in the floodplain and on the terrace of the Nitra at its confluence with the Radošinka. At the eastern edge of Zbehy, the Radošinka and Nitra rivers flow together. For cycling tourists, regional cycle route 2104 Nitra–Rišňovce is particularly relevant: it passes through Zbehy and is intended for both sporting and recreational cycling. This gives the village a specific connection to a regional cycle route without reducing it to a single excursion destination.

The transport situation is also clearly defined. Zbehy lies on a railway line and at an intersection of third-class roads with a direct connection to the I/64 transport corridor. This does not include specific timetables or current connections.

Churches and Traces of the Past

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is one of Zbehy’s important historical landmarks. It was originally Gothic and was mentioned as a parish church in 1397. As a protected cultural monument, it is registered under the identification number ÚZKP 1576/0. The church still houses the preserved painting from the original Chapel of St. Urban.

The Chapel of St. Urban stands directly on the site and foundations of an earlier chapel. It is intended as a place of prayer, veneration and thanksgiving to God. For your visit, it is important to distinguish between the individual historic sites: the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is registered as a cultural monument, while the chapel has its own religious significance.

The archaeological evidence extends beyond the churches. A Neolithic settlement of the Lengyel culture and a burial ground from the Early Bronze Age have been documented in the cadastral territory of Zbehy. At the Pod Lesneky archaeological site, the foundations of a Romanesque church were uncovered in 1967 and 1968. Remains of a medieval settlement from the 12th century were also discovered there. The settlement, probably called Ethei, existed from the 12th to the 15th century. The archaeological remains at Pod Lesneky are currently not presented to visitors – the site should therefore be regarded as a historical point of reference, not as a regularly presented attraction.

Jozef Ignác Bajza and the Cultural Profile

Jozef Ignác Bajza is also associated with Zbehy. He was the parish priest in Zbehy from 1815 to 1828 and is regarded as the author of the first Slovak novel. A monument to him stands in a park near the rectory. Bajzove Zbehy takes place in Zbehy every year as a recitation competition featuring Slovak poetry and prose. This allows the village’s history to be understood not only through buildings and excavations, but also through literature and public culture.

Other documented activities include the Zbehy shooting club. It holds shooting competitions at the local shooting range with participants from the Nitra region. Thus, in addition to cultural heritage and cycling, the village’s public life also includes a regional club activity.
