Discover the Nitra Region: Nature, Castles and Slovak Culture
The Nitra Region extends across southwestern Slovakia and borders Hungary along its entire southern side. Its landscape and cultural diversity ranges from the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area and historic castles to wine tastings, nature trails and activities related to the Topoľčianky National Stud Farm.
Landscape between Tribeč and Vtáčnik
The Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area lies within the two orographic units of Tribeč and Vtáčnik. Oak-hornbeam, oak and, at higher elevations, beech forests grow in Tribeč; thermophilous plant communities predominate. As a result, the landscape is not a uniform forest area but instead features different types of vegetation. Rare and protected plant species also grow in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area, including the large-flowered pasque flower and the Turk’s cap lily.
The wildlife can also be observed at a specific location: Žitavský luh is an important resting area for migrating waterfowl, especially the garganey (Anas querquedula). For a walk with informative stations, the Zobor nature trail begins at the Liečebný ústav Zobor in Nitra. The Zubria zvernica Lovce protected area has a 2.5 km forest nature trail with information boards and educational content about the surrounding nature.
Castles, Museum and Views
Nitra is home to Nitriansky hrad Castle, a national cultural monument. The castle consists of a cathedral, a bishop’s palace, utility buildings and an outer fortification. In 2007, the Diocesan Museum was opened in the grounds of Nitriansky hrad as the first diocesan museum in Slovakia. This makes it possible to combine the building and the museum in one cultural visit without equating the individual components of the castle.
Another historic highlight is the ruin of the Gothic Levický hrad Castle, built in the second half of the 13th century. From the summit of Levický hrad Castle, there is a view of the town of Levice and the surrounding area.

Mlyňany Arboretum is home to more than 2,300 tree and plant species. The Topoľčianky National Stud Farm offers a different focus; it was founded in 1563.
