Topoľčany District: Castles, Museums and Landscapes

Topoľčany District combines distinctive landscapes with castles, museums and archaeological sites. To the west, the landscape is framed by Považský Inovec, and to the east by Tribeč. In the eastern part of the district lies Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area; in the part belonging to Topoľčany District, oak-hornbeam forests, oak forests and, at higher elevations, beech forests shape the landscape. Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area also provides a habitat for rare and protected plant and animal species. Nature experiences and regional history thus come together within a compact thematic area.

Archaeology and Lakeside Landscapes

A special point of interest is Hradisko Valy. The open-air archaeological exhibition features reconstructed Slavic dwellings, a defensive rampart, a clay oven, a smithy and a storage pit. The site also includes the largest reconstruction of a Slavic gate in Central Europe. Access to Hradisko Valy is free year-round; the site is located about 5 km from Bojná.

The Duchonka recreational area offers a different kind of excursion. It lies in the cadastral area of Prašice, on the eastern edge of Považský Inovec, in and around the Duchonka Reservoir. The water surface can be used for swimming, boating, fishing and other sporting activities, but exclusively at your own risk. Duchonka thus complements the forested landscape with a place where activities on the water take center stage.

Oponice: Museum, Mansion and Castle Trail

Oponice brings together several cultural and historical attractions. From there, a hiking trail leads to Oponický hrad. The walk takes about 30 minutes, and the castle offers panoramic views across the Zobor Valley as far as Bánovecko. Those who prefer a longer marked route can choose the moderately difficult Oponice–Horné Lefantovce trail. It follows a green hiking trail past Apponyi Mansion, which is surrounded by an English park, and then climbs to Oponický hrad.

The Apponyi Museum contains more than 2,500 exhibits related to the Apponyi family. These include part of the Apponyi family library, founded in 1774. Another exhibition is devoted to objects recovered from Allied aircraft that crashed in the Tribeč Mountains at the end of the Second World War. The Apponyi crypt is located beneath the Church of Saints Peter and Paul and has been open to the public since 1993. The church also has an organ built in 1869 with 620 pipes.

Castle Ruins and Regional Collections

The ruins of Topoľčiansky hrad are located above the municipality of Podhradie in Topoľčany District. It is a royal castle dating from the 13th century. By car, the castle can be reached as far as the area below the complex; from there, it is about a five-minute walk. From Podhradie, the route takes about 15 minutes on foot via blue- and green-marked trails. A red cycling route also leads to the castle from Topoľčany.

In Topoľčany, the Tribečské múzeum complements the castle and landscape attractions with an extensive collection. The museum holds more than 90,200 collection items and regularly organizes exhibitions and workshops. Together with Hradisko Valy, the Apponyi Museum and the two castles, it offers a broad range spanning archaeology, family history, regional culture and hiking destinations.
