Biskupová – Landscape, History and Railway Line

Biskupová combines the landscape of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina, the Nitra Loess Hill Country, with a multifaceted local history. The municipality lies in the central part of this hill country and along the middle course of the Radošinka. The river flows through Biskupová and is 31.59 km long. Thus, the focus is not on a single major event, but on the interplay of the river course, an agriculturally shaped local landscape, historical traces and a preserved railway line. The 31.59 kilometres refer to the entire river, not to the section within Biskupová. The locality lies along the middle course; the Radošinka flows through Biskupová, while the railway line follows its course through the hill country. The term middle course refers to the river's position along its course, not to a separate waterway section.

Landscape Along the Radošinka

The Radošinka gives Biskupová a clear geographical connection. Its location along the middle course places the locality within the river's course, while the surrounding Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina defines the character of the hill country. Biskupová retained its agricultural character even during the First Czechoslovak Republic. Cereal crops occupied an important place in plant production: rye, wheat, oats and barley were cultivated above all, and these cereals are still grown today.

History with Several Place Names

The origins of Biskupová date back to the 13th century. The locality was first documented in 1326 under the name Villa Domini Episcopi Nitriensis. The historical names Pispeky from 1440, Wiskupowa from 1773, Biskupowa from 1786, as well as the Hungarian name Püspökfalu, have also been recorded. Biskupová belonged to the Diocese of Nitra and was later administered by the Radošina estate.

The history of the locality also includes a profound rupture: Turkish troops completely burned down Biskupová in 1599. Today, the linguistic tradition points to another enduring aspect of the locality's identity. The so-called Hlohov dialect is still used in Biskupová today. The Church of St. Michael the Archangel is also one of the visible cultural points of reference. Another notable find is the lower jaw of a mastodon from the Biskupová site, which was recovered in 1962.

The Zbehy–Radošina Railway Line

The Zbehy–Radošina railway line is also part of the orientation in Biskupová. It runs through the hilly landscape of the Nitrianska pahorkatina and follows the course of the Radošinka. The line includes a stop in Biskupová. Its history dates back to 26 November 1909, when it began operating.

For travel planning, the current classification of the line is decisive: no regular passenger trains have operated there for more than two decades, but the line has been preserved. It is therefore important to clearly distinguish between the historic railway connection, its route through the landscape and current regular passenger service.
