Čermany

Čermany combines a multifaceted local history with a clearly defined landscape. The municipality lies in the central part of the Nitrianska pahorkatina, and the Perkovský potok stream flows through Čermany. The cadastral area also contains the 5.45-hectare Čermiansky močiar wetland. It is subject to the fifth level of protection and falls under the jurisdiction of CHKO Ponitrie. Čermiansky močiar protects a marshy habitat of ecological and educational importance, home to protected animal species.

From Early Settlement to the Arrival of German Settlers

Archaeological evidence confirms that Čermany has been settled since the 8th century. The oldest written reference dates from 1257, when the place was called “CHERMEN.” Another formative period began between 1857 and 1861: German residents from Hanover and Oldenburg moved to Čermany, and the municipality was settled by farmers from northern Germany.

The German settlers made wooden shoes. They were also engaged in clearing forests and farming. This means that the history of the place can be understood not only through dates, but also through specific activities. The settlement's role as a military and trading station on a Roman road in the Germanic hinterland dates back even further. Čermany therefore represents several historical layers, ranging from its archaeologically documented settlement and written mention to the arrival of German settlers.

Church on the Hill

An important landmark is Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie in the southern part of Čermany. The church stands on a small hill rising to the west and is visible from all sides of the municipality. Its construction history reaches back to an original Renaissance church. In 1760, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style and renovated in 1813.

Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie is a single-nave church with a polygonal presbytery apse, an attached sacristy, and a projecting tower. A preserved Renaissance wall with keyhole loopholes surrounds the church. For finding your way around the area, this building therefore combines a highly visible location with an unusually clear sequence of Renaissance origins, Baroque alterations, and a later renovation.

Chapel, Statues and Memorials

The historic features of Čermany include the cemetery chapel Kaplnka Zmŕtvychvstalého, built in 1892. Three sarcophagi are located in the chapel's underground rooms. The village also has a late Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the late 18th century.

A late Classical column with a wayside sculpture of the Holy Trinity was erected in 1868 by Štefan Laluch and his wife. The statue of the Sacred Heart, with a sculpture of Christ at its center, was created on June 3, 1932. The names of all soldiers who fell in the First World War are commemorated on this monument. The Čermany First World War Memorial is a unique ceramic memorial bearing German names.
