Koniarovce – Manor House, Nitra Floodplains and Railway History

Manor House and Historic Garden

The manor house is the most prominent cultural focal point. The Baroque mansion dates from the 18th century and was remodeled in the 19th and 20th centuries. What remains is a single-storey, two-winged building with an L-shaped floor plan. Together with the historic garden, the manor house was declared a cultural monument in 1993.

The ornamental garden by the manor house was given a new layout of paths. Boxwood parterres that have survived to this day and botanically rare woody plants are among its documented features. The chapel there was converted into a filigree pavilion. The restoration of the manor house and historic ornamental garden is also documented in connection with the Fénix Award “Cultural Monument of the Year 2017”; the award was presented on November 29, 2018. Religious and Folk Traditions

The local cemetery contains a rectangular 19th-century chapel with a folk-style stone Pietà sculpture. A stone cross from 1893 bears a dedication inscription from Štefan Matronka and Mária Hacko. Koniarovce also has the new Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary and an altar.

Local culture is also expressed in more than just architectural monuments. The Koniarovčanka singing group was founded in 2001 and performs at anniversaries and carnival celebrations. A folk festival is held in Koniarovce on the occasion of the “Three Deceased Kings.”

Railway Line and the Nitra’s Waters

The railway station is important for placing Koniarovce within the region’s transport history. It is located on ŽSR Line No. 140 between Nové Zámky and Prievidza. The Nitra–Topoľčany railway section, with a stop in Koniarovce, was put into operation on September 16, 1881. A narrow-gauge railway to Oponice operated from 1912 to 1929. In addition to its cultural monuments, the village therefore has a clearly documented railway history with different phases of development.

On the water, the Nitra No. 4 fishing section is the relevant classification. It begins at the road bridge in Koniarovce and extends to the mouth of the Vyčoma stream near Praznovce. The section also includes the Dršňa and Lišňa tributaries, from their mouths to their sources. The Koniarovce fishing water is a left-bank watercourse in a former, separated river branch of the Nitra between Koniarovce and Dolné Lefantovce. The term “former” indicates its historical classification as a separated river branch.
