Nature and Trails Around Tyrnau

The Trnava Region lies in southwestern Slovakia and borders the Czech Republic and Hungary. Its travel character is shaped by the interplay of the Little Carpathians, cultural landscapes and regional history. Natural attractions include the Little Carpathians, Driny Cave and the Smolenice Karst area. The Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area is home to the Hlboča and Záruby National Nature Reserves as well as the Driny Cave National Natural Monument.

For hikers, the summit of Záruby provides a clear destination: it lies at an elevation of 767 meters and offers views across the entire Little Carpathians area. The circular hiking trail from Smolenice to the summit is approximately 10 kilometers long, of medium difficulty and signposted with yellow and blue markings. According to the available description, it is also suitable for younger children. A shorter, family-friendly alternative is the Smolenický kras educational trail. The 7.5-kilometer recreational route leads through the Hlboča Gorge, includes nine information stations and reaches the Molpír archaeological site. The gorge is also home to a 9-meter-high waterfall described as the only waterfall in the Little Carpathians.

The Majdan educational trail has a different focus. The easy, 5.5-kilometer route is primarily oriented toward forestry and natural history. It can be used in summer and winter, including with cross-country skis. This provides trails of varying difficulty and different ways of engaging with the landscape, without requiring you to commit to just one form of hiking.

Castles, Museums and Regional History

The region's culture can be explored in several different places. Smolenický zámok initially served as a watch fortress built in the 14th century and was later converted into a romantic residence. At Dolná Krupá Castle and the Ludwig van Beethoven Memorial exhibition, access is subject to the respective opening hours; the park is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in accordance with its opening hours. In Trnava, the Arcibiskupský palác has authentically preserved rooms with Renaissance vaults and Renaissance portals that form a cohesive Renaissance ensemble.

The Západoslovenské múzeum is housed in the building of a 13th-century Poor Clares convent. Its collections cover natural sciences, history and ethnology; it also manages a historical library. Anyone wishing to understand the region's historical character not only through individual buildings but also through collections and architecture will find a different perspective here from that offered by the trails of the Little Carpathians. Numerous water mills along the Malý Dunaj River add to the region's cultural character.

Cycling, Bees and Regional Specialties

For cyclists, the wine cycling circuit through the Trnava Region is described as comprising almost 100 kilometers of marked cycling trails. It connects Trnava with wine-growing communities below the Little Carpathians and consists of three circular routes of different lengths. Another documented option is reaching the ruins of Korlátka Castle by bicycle.

The region's offerings also include ways of experiencing nature and agriculture. The Včelovina complex includes a honey café, an educational herb and beekeeping garden, as well as interactive educational tours for school groups. Children learn about flower species, the work of beekeepers and life inside the hive. The Včelco cider mill below Smolenický zámok offers mead products and a tasting room where visitors can learn about the production process and special recipes.

Transport Connections and Other Places

Smolenice is connected to Trnava by rail and regular interregional bus services and lies on the edge of the Little Carpathians, providing access to numerous hiking and cycling routes. The Štrky recreational area has a body of water, an educational trail, nesting boxes for birds and bats, as well as a shelter with a barbecue area. It is connected to the center of Trnava by a continuous cycle path. As another contrast, Piešťany is located in the Trnava Region as a spa town.
