Veľké Orvište: Between the Danube Lowland and the Hills

Veľké Orvište is located at a remarkable transition point: between the northern foothills of the Danube Lowland and the northern part of the Trnava Hills. The Dubová stream flows through the area, which is also home to the artificially created Orvištský Canal. Together with the long local history, sacred buildings, fishing waters and community events, this creates a destination that combines nature and culture in a compact area. Veľké Orvište was first mentioned in the Zobor Charter of 1113 under the name villa Rivvis.

Landscape and historical orientation

The location between the lowland and the hills gives Veľké Orvište a distinctive geographical character. When planning your trip, it is not only the landscape forms that are interesting, but also the bodies of water in the municipality. Fishing events take place at the Záhumnie Pond, while the Dubová stream and the Orvištský Canal are other named features of the local surroundings.

One of the most striking historical landmarks is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1743. The single-nave church was extended and enlarged in 1940 by an addition with a square floor plan. It is located at the crossroads of the roads to Ostrov and Bašovce, by the Barina stream in the local cemetery grounds. Further religious monuments mark roads and former routes: The Pietà monument on the road to Bašovce dates from 1942 and was restored in 2009. The monument to the Holy Family stands on the road towards Ostrov, also known as Malé Orvište, and bears the year 1913. The monument to the Most Holy Trinity is located on the former road to Piešťany and is dated 1941.

Archaeology, Seal and Bell Tower

The history of the village extends far beyond its first written mention. Settlement traces from the older phase of the Neolithic period were discovered at the Niže cesty site. They are attributed to the Lengyel culture and dated to approximately 3500 BC. At the Topoľové site, poorly distinctive pottery sherds came to light; they are broadly dated to the Late Neolithic or the Eneolithic. More recent evidence also shapes the villagescape: The 1926 cemetery cross originally stood in the Dlhé stavanie field outside the built-up area. The historical seal of Veľké Orvište bears the year 1784 and shows a dove with a branch in its beak.

The evangelical bell tower is a distinctive feature. It was built in 1934 from stones from a demolished old evangelical church that had been brought from Vrbové. The bell weighs 50 kilograms and was made by R. Manoušek of Brno; its ceremonial consecration took place on 15 August 1933.

Fishing, Sports and Time with Children

In addition to its members, the Záhumnie Fishing Club also offers sport fishing to the general public. In 2024, the XIV edition of the trout competition Jarný pstruh in spinning took place at the Záhumnie Pond. Orviťský blyskáč is also a trout competition in spinning; its XIII edition was held in 2023. Mikulášsky blyskáč is described as a spinning competition for mixed pairs of two.

For physical activity, there is a 36 × 18 metre multipurpose sports field with an artificial surface. It was built in 2009; in 2018, its surface was changed to artificial turf and the area was used as a football training ground. Behind the cultural centre, there is also a new, maintenance-free children's playground with a safe play environment. It supports children's physical activity and social skills while also serving as a venue for community gatherings.

Events with a Local Character

The documented examples of events include various forms of community life. The XIV edition of the carp fishing competition Orvištský šupináč was scheduled for 25 April 2026 at the Záhumnie Pond in Veľké Orvište. The BOVO Olympics includes a goulash-cooking competition in which nine teams took part in the documented edition. As part of the Orvištské hody, a solemn holy mass was held on Sunday. At the celebration of Saint Hubert, a holy mass was followed by a social gathering and refreshments.
