Veľká Mača – Museum, Churches and Archaeology
Veľká Mača combines archaeological traces, sacred buildings and memorial sites with a cycling route through a variety of landscapes. If you would like to access the local information in one place, you can also find Veľká Mača here. The character of the place is particularly vivid where history remains visible not only in exhibitions, but also in churches, monuments, and the townscape.
Archaeology in the Museum and at the Archaeological Site
The Veľká Mača Museum, located next to the municipal office, is a branch of the Museum of Local History in Galanta. Its archaeological exhibits come mainly from the Mačianske vŕšky site and range from the Mesolithic to the Middle Ages. The municipal museum also presents the settlement history, folk traditions, and knowledge about the municipality’s natural environment. This means that a visit cannot be reduced to individual artefacts: it leads from the earliest traces of settlement through the everyday knowledge of the population to the local landscape.
Mačianske vŕšky lies on the boundary between Sereď and Veľká Mača in the direction of Sládkovičovo. The archaeological evidence from Veľká Mača includes Mesolithic finds, a Neolithic settlement, and a row cemetery dating from the 10th to the 11th century. The history of the place also describes 48 burial sites from the beginning of the 10th century, which provide insight into the customs of the population at that time. For visitors interested in cultural history, this creates a chronological arc from the Mesolithic to the early medieval burials.
Churches, Baptisms and Vanished Buildings
The Roman Catholic Church of Saint John the Baptist was built in 1783 in the Classical style with Baroque elements. The present church building preserves an original medieval stone baptismal font. This Gothic font is probably the last remnant of the vanished medieval church of Veľká Mača. A probably still Romanesque medieval church once stood in the centre of the village near the present Trinity Monument.
Smaller details also contribute to the character of the building: the church tower has two bells, while the windows depict saints in stained glass. A Lourdes grotto was created next to the church in 1991. The centre of Veľká Mača also features the Trinity Monument, which stands on the site of the former church; it was erected in 1860. Anyone wishing to explore the history of the place through specific buildings and memorial sites will find several points of reference from different periods in one location.
Monuments in the Townscape
Several statues complement the historic townscape. The statue of Saint Florian stands next to the kindergarten on Hlavná ulica. It was created by the stonemason J. Juhász from Sereď at the beginning of the 20th century. The statue of Saint Donatus stands on Cigánska ulica; it was erected in 1910 by the local Rosary Society. The statue of Saint Wendelin stands near the Protestant cemetery and was erected in 1820 by a local large landowner.
A monument in front of the museum commemorates deported and displaced Hungarians. Together with the church, the Trinity Monument, and the statues, it does not form a single architectural complex, but rather a series of different memorial sites throughout the village. The Hodové slávnosti are listed in Veľká Mača as an event held regularly in August.
Historical Location and Cycling Route
The location of Veľká Mača is historically associated with a crossroads of the Via Bohemica between Buda and Prague and the road between Bratislava and Nitra. A cycling route runs through Veľká Mača along paved, road, field, and forest paths. It is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. Alongside the archaeological and sacred themes, this provides a clearly described opportunity for active exploration of the place.
