Špačince – Culture, History and Landscape

Špačince in the Valley of the Krupanský potok

Špačince lies in the northern part of the Trnava Hills, in a flat, broad valley of the Krupanský potok. The village combines a multilayered history with documented cultural monuments, an educational trail and the protected bird reserve CHVÚ Špačinsko-nižnianské polia. This makes Špačince suitable for travellers who, on a trip through Slovakia, want to discover not only individual sights but also the historical traces of a place and its landscape setting.

Church, Calvary and Historic Buildings

An important landmark is the Roman Catholic church in Špačince. It is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, was originally Gothic and was built in 1312. Its feast day is 8 September. The religious history of the village also includes the Calvary complex in Špačince, dating from 1797. It has a Baroque cross; fourteen stations were erected there in 1873.

Further evidence can be found in the Špačince cemetery. It contains a statue of the Holy Trinity from 1717 and a statue of Saint Vendelin from 1807. The statue of Christ the King from 1678 also stands on the road to Trnava. It was created by Pavol Orban, brought from Lišov in the Krupina District, has survived to this day and is protected by the monuments authority.

Secular buildings include the manor house at 270 Kaštieľska Street. The single-storey Neoclassical building dates from the first half of the 19th century. A chapel with the crypt of the Schwertner family and its complete enclosure stands in the old Jewish cemetery of Špačince. The various religious and commemorative sites make it clear that the history of the village is not limited to a single era.

Archaeology, Nature and the Educational Trail

The historical depth reaches even further back: archaeological finds from the Neolithic period, dating to around 7000 BC, were discovered in the Špačince area. A silver coin from the Roman Empire period was also found in Špačince. In 1699, Špačince was granted town rights and market rights.

The Chotárom Špačiniec educational trail connects local history and the landscape. On five information boards, it provides information about the history and present of Špačince, archaeology and monuments, wildlife, plant life and local features. The protected bird reserve CHVÚ Špačinsko-nižnianské polia extends through the cadastral area of Špačince and serves, among other things, to protect the habitats of the saker falcon. The name refers to a specific nature conservation focus, not merely to a generally rural setting.

Events and Offers for Families

A recurring event in the local annual calendar is the Špačinský trojuholník run. It has taken place every summer without interruption since 1978. At the Špačince hody, held on the Sunday after the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on 8 September, roast goose is one of the traditional dishes. The church, feast day and regional cuisine are explicitly linked here through tradition.

Families can also find a playground in the village with a sandpit and numerous safe play elements, climbing equipment and slides. The playground is located in the immediate vicinity of the cultural centre; the Krupský potok flows past on one side. Regarding future cycling mobility, it should be noted that a cycle route is being built in the cadastral area of Špačince as part of the project “Cyklistické prepojenie obcí Trnava – Bohdanovce nad Trnavou – Špačince – I. etapa”.
