Štefanov between landscape, village history and Záhorie

Štefanov combines a rural landscape with remarkable religious buildings, preserved local details and a clear regional identity. The municipality lies at the transition from the Chvojnická pahorkatina uplands to the Borská nížina lowland. In the south, Štefanov extends into the flat floodplain of the Myjava River; the Štefanovský potok also flows through the village. Those who want to get to know a less urban part of Slovakia will find a village setting here where landscape, agriculture, local history and transport connections stand closely side by side.

Religious Buildings and Small Monuments

The most prominent historical feature is the Neo-Gothic Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. It was built in 1937 on the site of an older church dating from 1561. The interior has three naves and features a polygonal presbytery end as well as a projecting tower. The high altar bears a painting of Saint Catherine by E. Massányi. The church therefore offers not only a single historical reference, but also architectural details that help place the building more precisely.

Further religious monuments are scattered throughout the village. By the village stream in the centre stands a wayside statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, a folk stone carving from the late 19th century. The statue of the Seven Sorrows, also known as Božie muky, is located on a hill opposite house number 90. In the village centre, the Chapel of Saint Florian stands in front of the old fire station. In the cemetery, a Calvary group dating from 1921 commemorates the religious history of the municipality.

Landscape between Fields, Floodplain and Historic Settlements

The cadastral area of Štefanov is predominantly used for agriculture and is covered with acacia woodland only to a small extent. This distribution adds a distinctly rural character to the transition between the uplands and lowlands. Tomšov mlyn has its own historical significance. The settlement belongs to the historic settlements of Štefanov and preserves its original development; some of the buildings have architectural and historical value.

Individual destinations connected with Štefanov can also be found outside the village centre. The chapel at Stárniská stands on the road between Dojč and Štefanov, near the grounds of an agricultural cooperative. For orientation in the surrounding area, therefore, not only the centre is relevant, but also the connections between the neighbouring villages and the scattered historic points of interest.

Community Life, Traditions and Regional Culture

The local infrastructure includes a football pitch built in 2017 next to the grounds of the primary school and used by Športový futbalový klub Štefanov for football matches. The covered spectator stand is part of the facility, as are the changing-room and stand buildings, a multi-purpose sports field and a children’s playground. The sports complex therefore comprises several clearly designated areas and is not limited to the pitch itself.

A special cultural connection to the municipality is provided by the carnival tradition of “Turci”, which is still maintained in its original form. The municipal library also offers a fixed, though seasonally limited, schedule for quiet local orientation: during the school year, it is open on Wednesdays from 14:00 to 16:00.

Connections and Regional Context

Road II/500 connects Štefanov with Senica as well as with Šaštín-Stráže and Dojč. From there, it continues via Kúty and Sobotište to the border with the Czech Republic. Road III/1136 provides the connection to Unín and Radimov and runs for a length of 2 km through the entire built-up area of the village. Another connection is provided by road III/1033 to Letničie; it also joins road II/500 Kúty–Senica.

Štefanov is also one of the municipalities along the Záhorie Wine Route. In the wider regional area of this wine route, the Open Wine Cellars and Wine Sheds Day has been held annually since 2010. Together with the religious buildings, the Myjava floodplain landscape, the traces of historic settlements and the traditional carnival custom, this creates a multifaceted picture of the village within the landscape of western Slovakia.
