Vinohrady Nad Váhom: Winegrowing, the Váh Floodplain and Culture
Between the Váh Floodplain and the Vineyards
Vinohrady nad Váhom is situated in the Danubian Lowland on the western edge of the Nitra Hills. The western part of the municipality lies in the broad floodplain on the left bank of the Váh, while the southwest-facing slopes of the village are planted with grapevines. Winegrowing, the cultivation of grapes and winemaking for personal use have a long tradition here.
Wine Cellars and Historical Evidence
If you would like to discover the cultural character of the village, the traditional wine-cellar structures known as “hajlochy” are among its distinctive features. The surviving buildings have three rooms, are built of clay and whitewashed. Their single-axis façades and thatched gable roofs preserve a distinctive rural architectural style.
The recorded history also reaches far back: The settlement of Rautz, later called Svätá Chrasť, is mentioned in the Zobor Charter of King Coloman from the period before 1 September 1113. Another historical destination is the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, a building in the Late Renaissance and Baroque styles from the mid-17th century, first mentioned in writing in 1695. Historically, the church was popular as a pilgrimage church. The Chapel of St Urban was built in 1728 and was also a pilgrimage site.
Wine as Part of the Village Landscape
The wine tradition can be seen not only on the slopes and in the hajlochy. VÍNO CHUDÝ offers guided professional wine tastings in a tasting room. The room normally accommodates 16 people and, after modifications, up to 30 people. Winegrowing in Vinohrady nad Váhom is therefore documented both as a historical tradition and as a tangible cultural experience.
Nature Reserve, Cycle Route and Educational Trail
The natural environment includes the Dubník National Nature Reserve, NPR Dubník, which lies in the cadastral territory of Vinohrady nad Váhom. Part of the reserve extends into the cadastral territories of Dvorníky, Pusté Sady and Zemianske Sady. NPR Dubník is an ornithological area protecting the Eurasian scops owl. In addition, within a deforested landscape, it preserves a rare and unique remnant of a natural forest community from the group of Southeastern European forests with protected species.
For cycling orientation, Cycle Route 5212 is relevant. It passes through Vinohrady nad Váhom on the route from Hlohovec to Sereď and is 20.8 km long. The easy recreational cycle route is designed for road traffic and has an asphalt surface. On foot, the educational trail “Náučný chodník Hlohoveckými vinohradmi” leads to Vinohrady nad Váhom and the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. The educational trail is 22.3 km long and has an elevation difference of 150 m.
