Hlohovec District: Castle, River Landscape and Nature Experiences

Hlohovec lies at the foot of the Považský Inovec Mountains and combines historic buildings with a diverse river and natural landscape. The Váh flows through Hlohovec, shaping a place where you can combine cultural history, viewpoints, short themed trails and astronomical experiences.

Castle, Park and Historic Interiors

Hlohovec Castle was originally built as a medieval castle in the 13th century. A reconstructed part of the castle building has been open to the public again since autumn 2018. In the adjacent Zámocký park, you will find a small stone grotto with a spring and a stone relief of Neptune. The park complements a visit to the castle with a scenic impression, without requiring you to travel between widely separated sights.

The Zámocký poznávací okruh is suitable for a brief overview of the surrounding area. The walking trail includes five stations and is approximately 2.6 km long. Another historical facet is represented by the refectory of the Franciscan monastery. It contains a Renaissance-Baroque stucco ceiling dating from 1648 and an exhibition of historic furniture. The range therefore extends from medieval architectural history through Baroque furnishings to a thematically structured walk.

Viewpoints and Trails around Hlohovec

The Šianec viewpoint offers a panorama across the Dolnovážska Lowland as far as the Little Carpathians. You can reach Šianec on foot from the Empírové divadlo. By car, the approach follows Road II/507 in the direction of Bojničky. These two documented access routes make the viewpoint a clearly distinct destination for planning your day: you can combine the route with a walk or choose to approach via the specified road.

The Šulekovský poznávací okruh also has a different focus. The circular trail passes through Šulekovo and covers the history as well as the flora and fauna of the Váh region at four stations. It is approximately 2.9 km long. This provides two short trails with different focuses: the Zámocký poznávací okruh concentrates on the immediate surroundings of the castle, while the Šulekovský poznávací okruh reflects the historical and natural character of the Váh region.

Starry Skies and Protected Landscape

The Hlohovec Observatory has the second-largest telescope in Slovakia. It offers stargazing and projections with simulations of movements in the starry sky. This expands the selection beyond classic cultural destinations and provides a distinct option for a visit focused on astronomical themes.

In the Sedliská Nature Reserve, by contrast, xerothermic—that is, dry and warm—steppe-like vegetation takes center stage. Numerous large-flowered pasque flowers grow there. Sedliská belongs to the European Natura 2000 protected area network, is managed by the Little Carpathians Protected Landscape Area administration and is subject to the fourth level of protection. Protected animals recorded there include the European green lizard, Aesculapian snake, stag beetle and praying mantis. The area therefore combines botanical features, European protection categories and documented protected animal species, without reducing its importance to a single landscape impression.

Leopoldov and the History of the Váh

Leopoldov Fortress was built from 19 September 1665 according to a system that was modern for its time, as a star-shaped fortification with ramparts, bastions and walls. During the construction of the fortress, a bridge over an arm of the strongly meandering Váh was built between 1665 and 1669. This combination of military architecture and river history makes Leopoldov a distinct historical focus within the destination.
