Štefanov: Culture and Landscape in Záhorie

Štefanov combines a distinctive landscape setting with an unusually dense succession of small cultural monuments. The town lies at the transition between the Chvojnická pahorkatina and the Borská nížina. The Štefanovský potok stream flows through Štefanov; the southern part lies in the floodplain of the Myjava River. The cadastral area is predominantly used for agriculture and is partly covered with acacia woodland. Those looking for accommodation in Záhorie will therefore find not an interchangeable place name, but a location whose character emerges from its landscape, sacred architecture and regional history.

Church and Historic Town Centre

A central landmark is the Roman Catholic Church of St Catherine of Alexandria in Štefanov. It was built in 1937 and is Neo-Gothic in style. The building stands on the site of an older church dating from 1561. Inside, it has a three-nave space with a polygonal presbytery termination and a projecting tower. This combination of construction date, style and an older church site makes the church a particularly vivid testimony to the development of the town.

Several smaller sacred monuments also form part of Štefanov’s cultural character. Outside the built-up area stands the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, built in 1882. It contains a Pietà statue; the chapel was restored in 2013. In the cemetery there is a pseudo-Classical stone depiction of Calvary dating from 1921, attributed to the A. LOOS company from Brno. In front of the church stands a pillar cross from 1879 with folk-style depictions of Christ and the Virgin Mary.

Crosses, Chapels and Regional Traditions

The smaller monuments also tell of local foundations and religious remembrance. The Chapel of St Florian was built in 1921 in front of the fire station. After repairs, its lantern was opened and a statue of St Florian was placed inside. The statue of St John of Nepomuk in Štefanov was donated in 1788 by the miller Andrej Klena.

At the former settlement of the Horných-(Juračkových-) Mill on the road to Senica stands a stone cross from 1905. It was erected by Jakub Klena and his wife Mária. The former mill thus remains explicitly part of the historical context of the place. In the vicinity of Štefanov, near the U Hríchu settlement, there is an “Ecce Homo” statue created and erected around 1690. It has been restored and is accessible.

Štefanov is also one of the places in Záhorie with a long-standing Carnival tradition. In the park in the town centre, near the school, stands a monument to Red Army soldiers who died during the liberation in the cadastral area of Štefanov. The monument was erected in 1945 over a common soldiers’ grave. The town’s cultural spectrum thus extends from religious statues and popular piety to remembrance of the events of the 20th century.
