Veľké Kostoľany: Churches, Pilgrimage and Local History

Veľké Kostoľany combines a pronounced ecclesiastical history with archaeological traces, an agriculturally shaped landscape and a firmly established local cultural life. The late Gothic Church of Saint Vitus was built in 1464. To this day, it preserves a chancel with a Gothic rib vault, bricked-up Gothic windows, a stone sacrament house and a stone saddle portal. The main altar dates from 1815 and bears an image of Saint Vitus. Several clearly distinguishable periods are therefore evident in one building: late Gothic architecture and the furnishings of the 19th century. Another sacred sight is the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. The Baroque chapel was built in 1768 with a semicircular apse, a dome and an integrated tower. Inside, it preserves a Baroque altar from the second half of the 18th century with an image and a relief of the Virgin Mary. Every year, on the Sunday around 8 September, the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a pilgrimage takes place to a chapel dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Another historical reference is the Stations of the Cross built in 1924: Jozef Magula, who came from Veľké Kostoľany, had a new Stations of the Cross laid out at that time, replacing the earlier Calvary depiction consisting of seven masonry images.

Archaeological traces and the local landscape

The history of the locality reaches far back before the sacred buildings visible today. Archaeological excavations in 1959 uncovered a human skeleton from the 5th to 12th century AD, as well as the skeleton of a child from the Early Iron Age. Other finds include an amber bead, Late Stone Age Slavic pottery, Moravian painted pottery, and stone and blade tools made of radiolarite and obsidian. Archaeological investigations at the old brickyard and the clay pits in Zákostoľany also bear witness to settlement from the Neolithic period, approximately from 5000 to 2000 BC. The history of the locality thus encompasses traces from several periods and cannot be reduced to a single date. Veľké Kostoľany developed as a linear streamside village along the Chtelnička stream, which flows through the Kostolianska Valley. Agricultural land predominates and covers 85.05% of the cadastral area. These figures and the location along the stream explain the rural character of the locality more precisely than a general description of the landscape. The municipal library is also part of the local orientation: it offers 4,001 book titles from various literary genres for borrowing.
