Vlčkovce: Cycling Route, Floodplain Forest and Local Culture
Vlčkovce combines the landscape of the fertile Danube Lowland with cycling, regional traditions and notable cultural traces. The village lies at the transition between the subregions of the hilly area and the Danube Plain.
Cycling and activities around Vlčkovce
The Cyrilo-metodská Cycling Route runs through Vlčkovce. The entire route is 73 km long; recreational cyclists can also ride only part of it. This makes it possible to include the route to varying extents in a travel itinerary without covering the full distance.
Another form of physical activity is the focus of the traditional Vlčkovský Silvestrovský beh zdravia. The event took place on 31 December 2025 for the eighth time. The run started and finished at the Vlčkovce sports complex; the adult route led through the village streets.
Vlčkovský háj and the landscape along the Dudváh
The protected Vlčkovský háj is a distinctive natural feature. The area lies near the left bank of the Dudváh on the boundary between the cadastral areas of Vlčkovce and Majcichov. A remnant of an oak-elm-ash floodplain forest is protected in the grove, where endangered plant and animal species occur. It also contains an abundant population of snowdrops, a spring-flowering member of the snowdrop family. Vlčkovský háj complements the open landscape of the Danube Lowland with a clearly defined natural area.
Church, art and historical traces
The Church of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux was built in 1930 according to a design by the architect Michal Milan Harminc. Its single-nave structure has a transept and an asymmetrically positioned west tower; the exterior is inspired by Romanesque architecture. The present church stands on the site of an older church. Some sculptures and paintings from the predecessor building were transferred to its interior.
The sculptor and visual artist Fraňo Štefunko, who was born in Vlčkovce, also shapes the village’s cultural identity. His works can be seen, among other places, in the municipal office and the primary school. They include a statue of Peter Michal Bohúň. In 1968, Štefunko received the title of “National Artist” for his lifetime achievement.
Historical traces also include the Retzer family mill, whose history dates back to the 16th century, and the former sugar factory complex from 1925. Vidiecky dom Vlčkovce was ceremonially opened and made accessible to the public on 6 October 2017.
Regional specialities and events
“Vlčkovská klbáska” represents a particularly tangible part of the local food culture. In 2026, it was held for the 13th time as an annual sausage competition. A total of 55 sausage samples were evaluated in that edition. The samples were anonymous; the ranking was based on points for taste, smell, appearance and overall impression.
The traditional event “Jedlá starých materí” is also part of the local events calendar and reached its 22nd edition in 2026. Wine tastings are likewise among the traditional activities in Vlčkovce. Those who get to know the village through its culture and cuisine will find, alongside buildings and landscapes, occasions where regional traditions become visible.
