Senica: City History and Trails
Accommodation in Senica
Senica lies where the Záhorie Lowland meets the Myjava and Chvojnica Hills. The city’s history can be traced through its museums and historic buildings, while trails for cycling and hiking start here. Senica lies at the crossroads of historic trade routes: the Amber Road ran north to south along the Morava. The medieval Česká cesta connected Prague with Buda.
Museums and City History
The Senica Museum opened in 2020 and focuses on regional history. Its three permanent exhibitions span local prehistory, the founding of Senica along the Česká cesta, and life in the city in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The archaeological exhibition covers early Slavic settlement, evidenced at several sites in Senica.
The “Stará Senica” exhibition offers a closer look at the historic centre. A 3D city model shows Senica around the turn of the 20th century; since 2020, the exhibition has been part of the museum’s permanent collection. The City Museum offers a different approach to history: it is housed in a reconstructed 19th-century summer palace belonging to the large landowner Vagyon, formerly known as Sokolovna. Its 21st-century interactive exhibition uses modern technology.
Buildings from Different Eras
The Chapel of St. Anne is considered Senica’s oldest architectural monument. The single-nave Gothic building dates from the early 15th century; its features include a polygonal chancel and a simply Baroque-style façade. The Roman Catholic Parish Church of the Virgin Mary dates from 1631. The Evangelical church was built in the Neoclassical style in 1783–1784.
The Záhorská galéria Jána Mudrocha is housed in a late Baroque castle, probably completed in 1760. A small chapel with an illusionistic Baroque fresco is located in the upper section of its entrance tower. These different architectural forms also make the city’s history visible in its buildings: Gothic, Baroque alterations and Neoclassical style stand alongside an interactive museum presentation.
Near Pivák is the Škodáčkov Roller Mill, the only surviving mill in Senica’s Čáčov district. Preserved machinery and a permanent exhibition present the history of milling, traditional technical crafts and Čáčov. The mill is open to the public; visits outside special opening hours must be arranged in advance.
Cycling, Hiking and Recreation
For a longer cycling trip, the 128-kilometre Záhorská Cyclomagistrála starts in Senica. It is designated as an easy long-distance cycling route and is suitable for road bikes along its entire length. Check current route conditions before setting out. The 12-kilometre Chodník Viktora Beniaka hiking trail leads from Senica via Kunov towards Branč. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the trail’s current markings.
At Kunovská priehrada, the sandy beach is intended for relaxing, sunbathing and swimming. Senica’s Letné kúpalisko offers a large pool with a slide and diving board. It operates seasonally; check its operating status and available facilities before visiting. There are several options to choose from: a beach for relaxing by the water, an outdoor pool and a designated cycling route or hiking trail for active days.
