Podbranc: Castles, Trails and Landscapes
Podbranc combines traces of history, short routes to castles and a distinctive landscape with experiences that can be planned in different ways. The main attractions are Branč Castle, Starý hrad and several hiking routes. Those looking for accommodation in Podbranc can therefore tailor their stay to their preferred focus: a short castle route, a longer hike, a cycling tour or cultural and historical impressions.
Castles and history around Podbranc
Starý hrad is one of the oldest hillforts in the Záhorie region. The site is located in Podbranč, directly next to the medieval ruins of Branč Castle. A prehistoric settlement is also located at Starý hrad; it was already inhabited more than 5,000 years ago. As a result, very different layers of history come together at this location.
Branč Castle itself also offers a historical point of interest. It was built in the second half of the 13th century and formed part of a network of border castles intended to protect the routes from Moravia to the Danube Lowland. Podbranč is also home to Pagáč’s original mill and a collection of historic agricultural machinery belonging to Ing. Dušan Praženka. These sites complement a visit to the castles with insights into earlier forms of living, working and economic activity.
Short routes and longer hikes
For a compact tour, the Starý hrad–Branč educational trail is a good option. It starts at Branč Castle and leads towards the cemetery and Starý hrad. The educational trail is classified as an easy route and takes approximately 40 minutes. If you are looking for a manageable route with a historical focus, it can easily be planned as a separate item on your itinerary.
There is also a described hike in the surroundings of Podbranč that is about 7 kilometres long and takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours without breaks. Its starting point is on the square in front of the municipal office in Podbranč. Another route, the Chodník Viktora Beniaka, leads through Podbranč–Majer and Podbranč–Dolná Dolina onwards to Branč Castle. The route from Senica via the Kunovská priehrada reservoir to Podbranč has been undertaken as a tradition every November since 1999. The area around Podbranč is also considered suitable for cycling.
Landscape, views and nature
The Brančské bradlá area near Podbranč is characterised by a pronounced, erosion-shaped relief with distinctive elevations and rocky outcrops. This landscape character differs from the rest of the Myjava Hills. In good weather, the view from Podbranč extends across the Little Carpathians, the Záhorie Lowland, the Myjava Hills and the Chvojnica Valley.
The Myjava River is also part of the area’s natural attractions: it is designated as a natural monument. The larger southern section of the Rieka Myjava natural monument below Podbranč is also part of the Horný tok Myjavy European protected area within the Natura 2000 network. Those wishing to combine landscapes and historical destinations when planning their trip will find a range of points of interest here without having to commit to just one activity.
Local experiences for planning your trip
In the Varsíkovci settlement, there is a home distillery producing slivovitz. Tastings are available there, and bottles are also offered for purchase. This local attraction complements the historical and landscape destinations with a culinary experience.
When searching for a hotel or other accommodation in Podbranc, you can first decide which of these experiences should shape your days. The short route to Starý hrad and Branč, the approximately two-hour hike, the cycling opportunities, the views and the preserved evidence of local history each provide a different focus for planning your trip.
