Senitz: Cultural History and Routes to Kunovská priehrada

Senitz can be explored through two themes: the city’s cultural history and the routes to Kunovská priehrada. Anyone looking for a place in Slovakia with museums, historic buildings and clearly described routes can combine different interests here without the individual experiences blending into a single attraction.

Cultural History of Senitz and Senica

A good way to access the past is the Stará Senica exhibition. Since 2020, it has been one of the museum’s permanent exhibitions and uses a 3D city model to show Senica’s historic centre around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The model also makes buildings visible that no longer exist in the city today. As a result, the focus is not only on preserved buildings but also on vanished parts of the city’s history. The Archaeological Exhibition reaches even further back. It documents the settlement of Senica during all eras of human history. Among the finds on display is part of a woolly mammoth tusk, discovered during the construction of Kunovská priehrada and regarded as possible evidence of hunting. The exhibition thus connects the history of the place with a specific find from its surroundings. The religious and architectural history is also diverse. The Lutheran church in Senica is a Classicist church of tolerance, built in 1783 and 1784. Its tower was subsequently incorporated into the gable façade in 1794. The Roman Catholic parish church of the Virgin Mary dates from 1631, was originally Lutheran and became Catholic in 1654. This historical picture is complemented by the Záhorská galéria Jána Mudrocha, a publicly accessible gallery housed in a late Baroque château that was probably completed around 1760. The other documented cultural monuments include the statue of Saint Florian, which is registered as an immovable national cultural monument of the Slovak Republic and dates from the second half of the 18th century, as well as Sokolovňa, a restored summer house from the 19th century that is likewise registered as a national cultural monument of the Slovak Republic. The Škodáčkov Mill near Pivák adds preserved technical facilities to the selection. It is open to the public and conveys the history of milling, traditional technical crafts and the history of Čáčov.

Routes to Kunovská priehrada

For walks and a nature-oriented excursion idea, the Náučný chodník leads from Senica’s city park towards Kunovská priehrada along the Teplica stream. The route is 5 km long and lined with nine information panels. At the end of the Náučný chodník Senica–Kunovská priehrada, there is an interactive environmental corner for children that brings them closer to nature and its inhabitants in a playful way. Another described route begins at Senica’s central bus station and leads to the recreational area after 5.5 km. This information should be considered separately for orientation purposes. Kunovská priehrada has a sandy beach with parasols, a sports area with rental facilities and a boathouse that rents out water attractions. Thus, in addition to the route experience, there are also facilities at the route’s destination, without this allowing any particular season or current availability to be inferred.
