Piešťany District: Culture, Spa Island and Landscapes

Piešťany District combines Piešťany Spa Island with culturally significant places, historic sites and varied trails through landscapes along the Váh and the Považský Inovec. Here you can choose between city and spa island experiences, cultural monuments, nature trails and paved routes. These differences in particular make the region interesting for travel planning.

Piešťany: Spa Island, Culture and Events

The Colonnade Bridge connects the pedestrian zone in the historic city centre with Spa Island. On the island, the spa park, which forms part of Piešťany’s protected heritage zone, and the Kúpalisko EVA thermal bathing complex are among the destinations considered in greater detail. Piešťany therefore focuses both on a listed park and on a designated thermal bathing complex.

A cultural highlight is the Dom umenia Piešťany. Since 2022, the building has been a national cultural monument and one of the main co-organisers of the international Piešťany Festival, which has taken place annually during the summer months since 1955. During the season, Dom umenia organises concerts; the Rieger-Kloss organ is regularly used for organ concerts. An ethnographic exhibition presents traditional costumes from Piešťany and Krakovany, as well as embroidery and textiles typical of the region. The annual Tradičné umelecké remeslá event presents folk art, traditional techniques and cultural heritage.

Historic Places and Regional Museums

In Vrbové, the leaning bell tower is presented as a sight. It is one reason why the town is known as the “Slovak Pisa”. The Vrbové synagogue was built in 1882–1883 in the Moorish style. Both buildings give the town a clearly distinctive cultural and historical profile.

Kostolec lies at the western foot of the Považský Inovec and offers views over the lower Váh region. There, the site preserves the foundations of a partially reconstructed Great Moravian manor house and a pre-Romanesque rotunda. In Chtelnica, Kaštieľ Chtelnica is listed as a national cultural monument; the grounds include a park with a pond. The regional museum in Kaštieľ presents the history of Chtelnica and its surroundings in historical, palaeontological and speleological sections. The Malokarpatská galéria in Chtelnica regularly presents changing exhibitions by regional artists across three floors.

Krakovany also has its own cultural highlights. Visits to the ethnographic museum are possible by prior arrangement. At the Za krakovskú bránu Museum, bobbin lace is regularly displayed during the bobbin lace festival; the museum acts as the host for the event. Kaštieľ Moravany nad Váhom is currently closed to the public and should therefore not be planned as a regularly accessible sightseeing destination.

Nature Trails, Water Landscapes and Cycle Paths

Sĺňava is a reservoir of approximately 480 hectares in the wider Piešťany area, created on the Váh in the 1960s. In 1980, the area was designated a protected area for the protection of waterfowl. The paved Kolookruh Sĺňava recreational and educational circular route runs around the reservoir. It is suitable for cycling, hiking and inline skating; on foot, the circuit takes approximately three hours, while by bicycle it takes about 50 minutes.

For a self-guided hike, the Jelenie jamy educational trail is a good option. The hiking educational trail can be walked year-round, is of moderate difficulty, is 12.5 kilometres long, takes approximately four hours and includes six stations. At these stations, it presents natural and historical features of the adjacent part of the Považský Inovec. The Šterusy–Rebro–Sprosná–Orlie skaly educational trail likewise focuses on natural science and cultural history.

The Čerenec Nature Reserve protects rare forest-steppe plant and animal communities on Mesozoic limestone. It also has the richest occurrence of the large-flowered pasqueflower in the Little Carpathians. The Malá Vrbina educational trail runs along a paved path and is barrier-free. For shorter sporting connections, there is the approximately 2.3-kilometre Cyklochodník Dubová cycle path. It enables pedestrians and sports enthusiasts to cross Piešťany without contact with motor traffic.
