Moravany Nad Váhom: Nature, History and Trails at Považský Inovec

Moravany nad Váhom lies in the valley of the Striebornica stream at the western foot of Považský Inovec. Veľký jarok is designated as a protected natural monument with the fourth level of protection; the designation took effect on 1 September 2004. Currently, visitors can reach the natural monument via a branch from a green-marked hiking trail. A more extensive route option is the Jelenie jamy educational trail. It was revitalised in 2025, renamed from the Moravany nad Váhom educational trail and extended into a 12.5-kilometre circular route with 460 metres of ascent. The educational trail is accessible east of the village in the Striebornica valley. Its starting point is in the Volavec locality, 300 metres beyond the Striebornica reservoir. Below the Sokolie skaly rocks, the route passes an area where preserved thermophilic fauna and flora occur. The documented route therefore offers a concrete connection with nature without reducing the landscape to a single viewpoint. Cyclists also have a clearly described starting point in Moravany nad Váhom: blue-marked Cycling Route 2208 starts here and leads via Výtoky to Nová Lehota. The route surface is described as consisting of asphalt, paved paths and forest roads. This mix clearly distinguishes the cycling route in its design from the Jelenie jamy circular trail and the short branch to Veľký jarok.

Church, manor house and local history

Moravany nad Váhom was first mentioned in official records in 1348 under the name Marwan. An important architectural monument is the Kostol sv. Martina z Tours, with a medieval core dating from the 14th century. Its southern chapel was built in 1757 on the foundations of a Romanesque church from the first half of the 13th century. The building history reveals several historical layers within a single church complex. The Moravany nad Váhom manor house likewise points to a multifaceted past. Originally, it was a medieval complex consisting of several independent buildings. The manor house acquired its present appearance after a reconstruction at the end of the 16th century. It was built in 1900 and served to transport timber and people from the surrounding mountains.
