Ducové: Kostolec, Rotunda and Educational Trail

Ducové combines a striking landscape with an exceptional archaeological site. Kostolec is a limestone-dolomite spur rising 70–80 m above the Váh floodplain between Ducové and Hubina. Traces of a Great Moravian princely settlement lie on this ridge, bringing landscape and history together in a confined area.

On foot from Ducové to Kostolec

The Náučný chodník Kostolec Ducové educational trail begins in the centre of Ducové and leads 1.1 km to Kostolec. Along the way, it covers an elevation difference of 60 m; the stated walking time is 1 hour. The trail is self-guided and linear, but it can be walked in both directions. It is designed for pedestrians and can be used year-round. Along the route, you will find orientation information at seven stations as well as at two shared introductory panels. The educational trail is therefore also a clearly described connection between the village and the cultural monument. Those travelling to Kostolec by bicycle will find a separately documented option: the yellow cycle route 8201 begins in Ducové and climbs 1.1 km to Kostolec. The yellow cycle route 8201 climbs from Ducové to Kostolec over 1.1 km; the educational trail is a self-guided walking route from the centre of Ducové with an elevation difference of 60 m and a walking time of 1 hour.

The cultural monument on the spur

Kostolec is a national cultural monument and freely accessible to the public. A partially reconstructed Great Moravian princely estate with wooden palisades and a gate is located on site. The foundations of a pre-Romanesque rotunda have also been made visible. The princely settlement, built in the 9th century, is regarded as an example of an early feudal seat of the ruling class. The Ducovská Rotunda is also part of the archaeological significance of the site. Archaeological investigations uncovered the foundations of a church with a round nave and a horseshoe-shaped apse. Fragments of plaster with remnants of paintings also indicate artistic fresco decoration inside.

Village history and annual pilgrimage

The older part of Ducové also contributes to the character of the village. The eastern, older part of the village lies on the slope of the Inovecké predhorie and is characterised by houses traditionally built from unfired bricks and rammed earth. In this way, the village architecture complements the archaeological traces at Kostolec with a later-developed local history. A national pilgrimage dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius has been held regularly every year at the beginning of July at Kostolec near Ducové since 1990. It is therefore one of the village’s recurring cultural references and is connected with the historical significance of the ridge. Those considering Ducové as a travel destination will therefore find not just any starting point, but a clearly recognisable place with a cultural monument, archaeological findings, marked trails and traditional building fabric.
