Sokolovce – Park, Váh and Baroque Traces

Sokolovce combines the landscape along the Váh with several traces of cultural history. The municipality lies about 7 km south of Piešťany on the left bank of the Váh, where its left-bank floodplain transitions into the southwestern part of the Považský Inovec mountain range. The Sĺňava reservoir forms a natural boundary of the municipality. River landscapes, protected nature, parks and buildings from several centuries thus come together in a small area.

Váh Landscape, Park and Protected Nature

Part of the municipality lies within the Sĺňava Natura 2000 protected area. The protected bird area bears the identification number SKCHVU026 and covers 691 ha. It was established to protect aquatic habitats and breeding bird species. Sĺňava is therefore not only a geographical boundary, but also shapes the natural environment around Sokolovce.

In the renovated southwestern part of Sokolovce Park, recreation and outdoor activities are open to the public. The park includes an educational trail, a restored pavilion, play equipment and an outdoor fitness area. The grounds of Sokolovce Château also include a park enhanced by David Horn, with a pond. Protected rare trees grow there, especially plane trees and two European beeches more than 200 years old.

For a shorter cycling route, there is a cycle path on Piešťanská Street. It was built in two stages in 2020 and 2021 and is 1.2 km long. This means that, alongside the natural area by the water, Sokolovce also has a documented local cycling connection.

Château, Church and Historical Evidence

Sokolovce Château is a Baroque-Classical manor house dating from the mid-18th century. A tower was added in the second half of the 19th century. It is listed in the Central Register of the Slovak Monuments Fund under number 1019/1. For an accurate understanding of the building, it is important to note that it is currently privately owned and in very poor condition. The château formerly served as a psychiatric hospital.

Another prominent landmark is the originally Baroque Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, built between 1768 and 1770. In a niche above its entrance stands a Baroque statue of Our Lady of Sorrows dating from 1700 to 1706. The church also contains an organ made in 1755 by the organ builder Ján Mocke and brought to Sokolovce around 1786 from the Trinitarian monastery in Trnava, presumably after the monasteries were dissolved by Joseph II.

The history of the municipality extends even further back. Settlement traces from the Early Stone Age have been documented. Finds from the Early Iron Age, including the La Tène period, have also been discovered in Sokolovce. In addition, there is a Germanic grave from the 3rd century AD. Near the parish church stands the Calvary group of Sokolovce, a Baroque sculptural group that is said to have been moved there from an original location that remains unknown.

The religious history of the area also belongs to a historical, not contemporary, perspective: in the past, the traditional Sokolovce church festivals were characterized by pilgrimages in honor of the local Virgin Mary; pilgrims came from the wider surrounding area.

Guided Excursion on the Váh

A documented way to experience the river landscape differently is a guided excursion on the Váh between Sokolovce and Hlohovec. After a bus transfer from Hlohovec to the starting point in Sokolovce, the trip on the river begins. Inflatable or plastic canoes, a raft and a paddleboard are available to choose from. Before departure, the necessary registration, distribution of the water sports equipment and boats, and an introduction are completed. The excursion is therefore described as a guided format with a defined start procedure.
