Prasnik: Educational Trails, Nature and History in Slovakia

Prašník combines designated educational trails with protected natural formations, archaeological traces, and an exhibition on geology and fossils. For planning your trip, the selection of different routes is particularly interesting: one circular route leads through Čerenec, over Tlstá hora, and to the rock formations Malá Pec and Veľká Pec; another educational trail focuses on geodiversity and follows a 13.7-kilometre circular route.

Educational Trails for Different Discoveries

The Prašník–Čerenec–Tlstá hora–Malá Pec–Veľká Pec–Barónov hrob–Prašník educational trail is an 11.0-kilometre circular route with an elevation gain of 396 metres. It has six stations and requires approximately three to four hours of walking. The route is suitable for hikers on foot and accessible year-round. The municipal office of Prašník is indicated as the best starting point; it can be reached by bus.

Another thematic focus is offered by the Pustá Ves–Kras–Drieňový vrch–Trianova dolina–Jaskyňa Klenová–Rozhľadňa Klenová–Kameňolom pod Hrádkom–Pustá Ves educational trail. It is considered the first educational trail in Slovakia dedicated to geodiversity. The term refers to the diversity of geological forms and phenomena. The Pustá Ves–Klenová educational trail is a 13.7-kilometre circular route. At the Letohrádok station, you can switch to the other educational trails Prašník–Barónov hrob and Šterusy–Orlie skaly.

Protected Landscape and Special Natural Formations

The Čerenec Nature Reserve is located in the cadastral area of Prašník and covers 1.50 hectares. It is known for its rich occurrence of the great pasque flower (Pulsatilla grandis); at the same time, the fourth level of nature protection applies there.

Veľká Pec is a protected natural formation in the form of a rock overhang and lies in the cadastral areas of the municipalities of Prašník and Šterusy. Malá Pec is a natural monument with a rock gate in the cadastral area of Prašník. Veľká Pec Cave is one of the caves in the Little Carpathians that are freely accessible to the public. In addition, the Veľká Pec cave settlement is a Palaeolithic archaeological site with fossil finds, including mammoth and cave bear bones.

Archaeology, Culture and Local History

On Tlstá hora, there are remains of a settlement dating from the Early Iron Age and a later fortified Bratrík camp from the 15th century. The route thus connects named landscape features with two different historical periods. If you would like to learn more about geology and fossils, the exhibition in Prašník is open to the public during the municipal office's office hours, by prior arrangement with the mayor.

Near the centre of Prašník stands a water mill that was built in the second half of the 19th century and declared a cultural monument in 1984. In local usage, it is also called Devátnikov mlyn. In the Dúbrava district, the SNP Monument has been protected as a cultural monument since 1963. During the annual SNP celebrations, a ceremonial wreath-laying ceremony takes place there in memory of the soldiers who fell in the Second World War. The former summer residence of the Wattenwyl family in Pustá Ves was burned down by the retreating German troops; this connection forms part of the locality's historical past.

ÄŒerenec and Further Orientation

The VN ÄŒerenec water body is a local carp fishing area covering 38 hectares. The ÄŒerenec reservoir was created, among other reasons, to provide opportunities for recreation and fishing. The water area therefore complements the routes, natural formations, and historical sites with another documented aspect of the locality.
