Galanta: Castles, Museums and Wine Traditions

Castle Park and Historic Buildings

The historic park surrounding the Neogotický kaštieľ is the largest contiguous green space in the town of Galanta. It offers visitors opportunities for a short rest while also providing the castle complex with a distinctive landscape setting. The present appearance of the Neogotický kaštieľ dates back to a Neo-Gothic reconstruction carried out in 1861.

A second important site in the town’s history is the Renesančný kaštieľ. It is one of Galanta’s most significant historic monuments. Comprehensive heritage restoration, carried out from 1980 to 1992, made it accessible to the public. Inside, there is a local-history exhibition about Galanta and its surroundings. The Renesančný kaštieľ thus complements the architecture of the Neogotický kaštieľ with an exhibition venue more strongly focused on local history.

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Stephen the King is also historically noteworthy. It was built from 1797 to 1800 and consecrated in 1805. Its furnishings include a Baroque altar from a chapel that was demolished in 1741.

Museums and Personal Memorial Sites

The Vlastivedné múzeum v Galante focuses in particular on documenting milling in the catchment area of the Little Danube and along the lower reaches of the Váh. This focus makes the exhibition interesting for travellers who want to learn about regional history not only through buildings, but also through earlier forms of economic activity and everyday life.

Several smaller exhibitions add personal and musical accents. The Pamätná izba Zoltána Kodálya presents important stages and achievements from the life of the renowned composer. The Pamätná izba Karola Duchoňa is a permanent exhibition honouring the exceptional musician and pop singer Karol Duchoň. It displays his awards, an authentic painting by Barbora Didovová, and extensive photographic documentation. Another permanent exhibition is the Izba starých gramofónov a šelakových platní from the collection of Kristián Takács.

Water, Cycling and Excursions

For a more active or relaxed day, Vodný svet GALANDIA is available. The facility has an indoor swimming pool with four stainless-steel pools. At Ranč na Striebornom jazere, fishing is possible on two lakes. During the school year, programmes such as nature stays and one-day excursions are also offered there.

From Galanta, cyclists can access the Vážska cyklomagistrála towards Kolónia, Váhovce and the Kaskády recreational area. The route therefore offers a concrete opportunity to combine a stay in Galanta with a cycling trip without giving up the town’s cultural focus.

Wine and Events in the Town Park

Promitor Vinorum offers organised group wine tastings combined with cellar tours. On three hectares, neglected vineyards have been rehabilitated there for 25 years. The varieties grown are Rizling vlašský, Rizling rínsky, Devín, Zweigelt and Dunaj. The Galantské trhy are also significant for the culinary side of a trip: since their sixth edition, they have been held under the patronage of the town of Galanta. Vínna ulička has been an annual part of these markets on the grounds of the Neogotický kaštieľ in Galanta’s town park.

Stretnutie vo farbách is a traditional summer event in the town park. It gives creative artists space to present their works and offers art-interested visitors valuable artistic experiences. Another traditional wine-tasting event is Mikulov baví Galantu, featuring wines from the Mikulov wine-growing subregion.
