Veľké Úľany Between Watercourses and Cultural Heritage

Veľké Úľany is located in the Podunajská nížina lowland between the Čierna Voda and the Malý Dunaj. The Čierna Voda flows through the northern part of the municipality. For travel planning, this gives the place two clearly distinct sides: documented architectural and cultural monuments, as well as activities centred around water, animals and movement. Rather than a single highlight, you will find various points of interest here for a stay connected with culture and nature.

Cultural Monuments with Clear Historical Traces

One of the prominent cultural monuments is Malá Kalvária. It is listed under number 2522 in the Central List of National Cultural Monuments of the Slovak Republic. The complex was built in 1740, and its chapel was constructed in 1756. It includes a pear-shaped atrium, the Chapel of Sedem bolestnej Panny Márie, statues of Panny Márie and sv. Jána evanjelistu erected in 1759, a stone cross dating from 1775, and chapels of the Stations of the Cross.

Another approach to the local history is provided by the Dom ľudového bývania. The building has a thatched roof, a courtyard, a draw well and an enclosure dating from the mid-19th century. It was built in 1910 and, following reconstruction, opened on 1 July 1991. The exhibition at the Dom ľudového bývania was opened to the public in 1992. Alongside the religious complexes, this places an example of the area's historical residential and courtyard structure in the spotlight.

The centre of Veľké Úľany is also home to the Kúria, a Classicist building erected by Mikuláš Lacsný in 1828. It is a single-storey structure with an L-shaped floor plan and an open arcade in the courtyard area of the side wing. The Roman Catholic Church “Kostol sv. Michala archanjela” was begun in the Renaissance style in 1594 and, according to the available information, completed in 1670. Its tower was built in 1718, and the church was extended with side aisles after 1756. In addition, the Protestant church was converted in 1958 from an agricultural building belonging to the Pálffyho majera on the initiative of Slovak immigrants, mainly from Dolná zem.

Lotos Lake and Cycling Routes

Lotos Lake offers a different way to spend the day. The area covers 3.5 hectares and includes a 1.1-hectare lake. It features a mini zoo, a children's playground and horse riding. Fishing is also available in the lake. The 1.1-hectare lake is home to eight fish species, including carp, crucian carp, grass carp, pike and catfish, as well as other species. This allows you to combine cultural sightseeing with a family-oriented recreational area and waterside observation during your stay, without conflating the different activities.

A new cycling route runs outside the main road and is 4.89 km long in total. Of this distance, 2.299 km follows the flood protection embankment of the Čierna Voda watercourse. Another cycling route leads from Veľké Úľany to the industrial park in Sládkovičovo.
