Gallandau – Manor Houses, Museum and Galandia

Gallandau combines historic architecture, regional collections, parkland and various opportunities for active or relaxing days. If you are looking for a place in Slovakia with visible traces of Esterházy history, museums and a year-round water complex, the town offers several distinct themes. Cyclists will also find a clearly described connection to the Váh long-distance cycling route.

Manor Houses and Museums

The Neo-Gothic manor house acquired its present appearance in 1861. Romantic elements shape both the façade and the interior. The north wing serves as an exhibition pavilion and houses, among other things, the Zoltán Kodály Memorial Room and the Karol Duchoň Memorial Room, which is arranged as a permanent exhibition. Another permanent exhibition is entitled “The Room of Old Gramophones and Shellac Records” and comes from the collection of Kristián Takács. The manor house therefore covers a spectrum ranging from architectural history to the remembrance of music and historic sound recordings.

A second focal point is the Renaissance manor house. It was built by František Esterházy around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, it houses an exhibition on bourgeois domestic culture from the late 19th century, as well as a local history exhibition on the history of Galanta. This ranges from the earliest material evidence and written sources to the development of crafts and domestic culture in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Galanta Local History Museum was founded in 1969 with the task of documenting, protecting, processing and presenting the development of nature and society through regional collections. A particular focus is placed on the history of milling in the catchment area of the Little Danube and along the lower Váh.

Park, Water and Cycling

A historic park surrounds the Neo-Gothic manor house. It is Galanta’s largest continuous green space and offers visitors opportunities for short breaks. Galandia provides weather-independent water experiences: The year-round water complex includes an indoor swimming pool and four stainless-steel pools. The indoor facilities also include a children’s pool and a water slide.

From Galanta, you can connect to the Váh long-distance cycling route in the direction of Kolónia, Váhovce and the Kaskády recreational area. The cycle paths in Galanta run through flat, easy-to-manage terrain and are considered suitable for children and less experienced cyclists. This allows a cultural stay to be complemented by a route along the Váh without reducing the character of the town to a single excursion destination.

Wine, Lakes and Sacred Buildings

Promitor Vinorum offers organized wine tastings for groups, combined with a visit to the wine cellar. The Ranč na Striebornom jazere complex features two lakes where fishing is possible, as well as a themed children’s playground and a riding school.

The historic sacred buildings include the Esterházy Princes’ Chapel. It was built in 1871 and restored in 1998. Inside is an oil painting from the same year entitled “Ukrižovanie”, as well as Baroque stone sculptures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul dating from 1741. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Stephen the King is a monumental two-towered Classical building with Baroque elements. Its furnishings include a Baroque altar from the demolished Baroque chapel of 1741.

The Galantské trhy also preserve a market tradition dating back to the 17th century. Their traditional features include an annual wine street on the grounds of the Neo-Gothic manor house in the town park.
