Horné Saliby combines thermal waters with a local history shaped by two churches and their different building phases. The bilingual Evangelical congregation adds another cultural perspective. If you are considering a destination with thermal attractions and local culture for your trip to Slovakia, these themes can help guide your choice.

Thermal Waters in Horné Saliby

The thermal water at the Horné Saliby thermal baths rises from a depth of 1,559 metres and has a temperature of 67 °C. If thermal water plays a role in your choice of destination, depth and temperature are concrete features to consider. The thermal baths extend across the cadastral areas of Horné Saliby and Diakovce. Both cadastral areas should therefore be taken into account when locating the facility geographically.

Rehabilitation Area

The rehabilitation area of the Horné Saliby Relaxation and Rehabilitation Centre offers massages and physiotherapy with ultrasound, magnetotherapy and electrotherapy. It also has Finnish, steam and infrared saunas with a relaxation room, hydromassage showers, foot massages, and a small swimming pool with a massage pool. If you are planning to use a specific treatment or facility, check in advance whether it will be available during your visit.

Churches and Building History

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Lawrence the Deacon stands on the foundations of an older place of worship dating from the 11th century. The present-day Neoclassical church was completed in 1775 to plans by Jakab Fellner. The dates refer to different historical layers: the 11th century relates to the older place of worship, while 1775 marks the completion of the present-day church.

By contrast, a later renovation is central to the history of the Evangelical church: it was remodelled in the neoclassical style and fitted with a tower between 1856 and 1861. Both “Classical” and “neoclassical” refer to classical forms, but the dates mark different events: the completion of the present-day Catholic church and the later remodelling of the Evangelical church.

Bilingual Congregational Life

The Evangelical congregation in Horné Saliby is bilingual. Services are held regularly on Sundays, in Slovak at 09:15 and in Hungarian at 10:30. The two start times are 75 minutes apart, with each language assigned its own service. Times may change. If you are planning around a service, check the times in advance.

Manor House and Culture

The Esterházy manor house is located in the centre of Horné Saliby and is a cultural monument of local significance. It is currently in poor condition; reconstruction is planned. Its current condition and the planned reconstruction are two separate details: the building is in poor condition now, while reconstruction is planned.

The Csemadok cultural festival is one of the cultural activities in Horné Saliby. It offers another point of interest for travellers who are interested in local cultural life as well as the history of the churches.
