Veľký Grob: Landscape, Educational Trails and Local Culture

Veľký Grob lies on the boundary between the northernmost part of the Danube Lowland and the southernmost part of the Trnava Hills. For your travel decision, the village therefore combines different facets: wetlands and peat bogs, paths through the built-up area, historic churches, regional embroidery and a strong farming tradition.

Landscape and Paths around Veľký Grob

East of Veľký Grob, in the Danube Lowland, lies the Uľanská mokraď wetland area. The cadastral area also contains four peat bogs that offer opportunities for fishing. The educational trail Náučný chodník okolo „Rašeliny“ provides an introduction to the natural environment. It follows an approximately 3-kilometre route around the Rašelinisko pond and has four educational panels as well as an additional information board. The panels introduce important representatives of the nearby fauna and flora, including mammals, fish and birds. The educational trail begins at the “Pod vŕbami” recreation area. There are seating areas, a place for roasting food and shelter from strong sunlight. Those who prefer the local history of the area to exploring the landscape can use the local educational trail on the history of Veľký Grob. It leads through the built-up area and includes eight information panels. For cycling tours, cycle route 2212 is documented; it runs across fields past the gravel lake to Veľký Grob. The Pusté Úľany–Veľký Grob hiking route also leads to Veľký Grob.

Churches, Manor House and Embroidery

The Pálfiovský kaštieľ was probably built in the second half of the 17th century as the seat of an economic district of a feudal estate and as the residence of the estate administrator. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Anne was created in 1771 by expanding an earlier Baroque chapel. It contains an organ from the workshop of the Trnava organ builder Valentín Arnold, dating approximately from around 1800. The Evangelical church was built as a Toleration church in 1788. In 1936, it was demolished and rebuilt according to a design by the architect M. M. Harminc; the Baroque-Classical tower from the end of the 18th century was preserved. The embroidery ornamentation of Čataj and Veľký Grob was transferred to textile paintings and adorns the altar cloths of the Evangelical church. The cultural element “Ornament from Čataj and Veľký Grob” bears the year of inscription 2019. Before the First World War, Veľký Grob was a well-known centre of embroidery. Embroidery, the distinctive traditional costume of Veľký Grob, painted rooms and hallways, and the architecture of old houses combine Slovak, Haban, Croatian and Hungarian cultural influences with a distinctive local character. Among the important embroiderers and pattern designers associated with the village was Pätoprstá Mária. She mastered traditional pre-drawn embroidery, including its pattern and variant forms for parts of the women’s costume in Veľký Grob. The traditional costume and embroidery of the Evangelical population of Veľký Grob and Čataj are also characteristic of both municipalities through their colours, ornamental decoration and embroidery patterns. The Evangelical congregation of Veľký Grob–Čataj commemorates the consecration of the church on the penultimate Sunday in August; the cultural centre in Čataj is decorated with murals by Mária Bagiová.

Local Markets and Municipal Traditions

Several editions of the farmers’ markets were held in the local marketplace in 2022, 2023 and 2024. They offered a wide selection from producers and growers from Veľký Grob and the surrounding region, as well as a refreshment stall. The Grobská sedliacka olympiáda was held for the second time in 2022 and for the third time in 2023 as part of the municipal celebrations. At the 2022 edition, several disciplines tested the agricultural skills of the participants. A monument in Veľký Grob commemorates a total of 41 documented fallen soldiers.
