Sereď: Culture, History and Cycling Route along the Váh

Sereď combines several clearly distinguishable sides of Slovakia: urban history, remembrance of the Holocaust, traces of Šintava Castle and a cycling route along the Váh embankment. City Museum and Special Exhibitions

The Sereď City Museum is located in the former Roman Catholic parish, now known as Fándlyho fara. The museum has six permanent exhibitions. One of them is the exhibition “Dialogue of Recognition through Touch.” It uses modern technology, including a 3D model and audio commentary in Slovak and English, and is aimed at blind and visually impaired visitors.

The main exhibition of the City Museum is dedicated to Šintava Water Castle. It presents archaeological finds from the courtyard of Sereď Castle, including ceramics, tiles, valuable glass, weapons, smaller objects and coins from excavations carried out between 1984 and 1992. This means that the focus is not only on the structure itself, but also on the material evidence of its former use.

Šintava, Castle Park and Historic Buildings

The bastion of Šintava Fortress contains so-called casemates with two pairs of gun embrasures, a large vaulted room and three pillars. The structure was built of bricks in the mid-16th century, around 1550. Sereď Castle and Park also preserve a surviving section of Šintava Castle, created by connecting and rebuilding parts of the former water castle.

Historical evidence can also be found outside the museum. The Jewish ritual bath, the mikveh, in Sereď was built in 1904–1905. The Church of St. John the Baptist was built in 1781 in the Baroque-Classical style and is one of the city's landmarks. The cadastral area also contains a protected park area that follows the ground plan of the former outer Renaissance fortifications of Šintava Castle.

Holocaust Museum Memorial Site

The Holocaust Museum in Sereď preserves the memory of the events of the Holocaust that affected Slovak Jews and serves to educate the general public. Its educational work takes place in the authentic premises of the former labor camp and later concentration camp. The museum also offers a guided tour or explanation in sign language. This site establishes a deliberate, distinct focus alongside the exhibitions on the city's history.

Festival Tradition and Cycling along the Váh

The Seredský Hodový Jarmok is held regularly in the last third of June, traditionally around St. John's Day. Since 2022, its program has also included historical and craft-related activities. Since 2015, concerts in the municipal amphitheater have also been part of the Seredský Hodový Jarmok. For cyclists, the route along the Váh embankment is a clearly named element of the local area. It connects the northern and southern parts of the cadastral area of Sereď and is part of the Vážska cyklo-magistrála.
