Tomášikovo: Water Mill, Park and Little Danube

Tomášikovo combines several distinctive aspects of the Slovak cultural landscape: a preserved water mill, a protected sand area, a historic park, religious sites and access to the Little Danube. Water Mill and Historical Heritage

The defining cultural and historical feature is the water mill in Tomášikovo. It was built in 1893 by János Maticza and has been preserved in its original condition, with complete and operational milling equipment. Since 1982, it has been open to the public as a unique technical monument of traditional milling. It is managed by the Museum of Regional Studies in Galanta.

The architectural heritage also includes Tomášikovo Manor House with its farm buildings. The complex is Baroque-Classical in style and was probably built in the 1760s according to plans by the architects J. Thalherr and J. Fellner. The manor house stands on older foundations dating from the 17th century. Another historical landmark is the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1801.

Park and Protected Landscape

The park in Tomášikovo is a national cultural monument. A network of paths runs through the grounds, and small bridges allow visitors to cross the waterways. The park is used for recreation by residents and visitors to the municipality.

The Tomášikovský presyp west of Tomášikovo on the left bank of the Little Danube has a distinctly different character. The area covers 0.988 hectares and was protected as a natural monument in 1973. The protection applies to the typical communities of sand- and drought-loving plant and animal species along the edges of the area.

Cycling Route, Pilgrimage and Water Experience

For a short bike ride, Route 8247 Starý Háj – Tomášikovo is a clearly described option. The yellow-marked, easy MTB leisure route is 3.9 kilometres long. It connects the Po stopách vodných mlynov circuit with the wooden mill in Tomášikovo and the municipality. From the mill, the route continues to the centre of Tomášikovo, where it ends.

The Little Danube also shapes the possible experiences. It is navigable for boats along its entire course year-round. Paddlers can stop or camp at the wooden water mill in Tomášikovo. A trip on the Little Danube with a stop at the water mill site is also suitable for beginners and families. This allows Tomášikovo to be experienced not only from roads and paths, but also from the water.

The religious centre of the village is the Lourdes Grotto. It was recognised as a Marian pilgrimage site of the Archdiocese of Trnava by a decree dated 5 September 2015. According to its inscription, the grotto was built in 1901; according to old sources, the stones used for it were brought directly from Lourdes. During the pilgrimage, some pilgrims currently walk from Vozokany to Tomášikovo. The pilgrimage currently ends with a solemn Holy Mass at the Lourdes Grotto in the cemetery of Tomášikovo. The main pilgrimage takes place on the Saturday closest to 8 September.
