Veselé – between rolling hills and the Dudváh

Veselé combines a distinctive landscape setting with churches, archaeological traces and lively local festivals. The village lies at the transition from the northeastern edge of the Trnava Hills to the Považský foothills of the Danubian Lowland. At the same time, Veselé is situated on a terrace on the right bank of the Dudváh. Those looking for accommodation in Veselé will therefore find a place whose character is shaped not by a single highlight, but by the interplay of landscape, local history and regional everyday life.

Landscape and village character

Veselé has partly preserved its agriculturally shaped character to this day. This classification is more important for orientation than a general description as a destination for excursions: the village is clearly situated within a cultural landscape whose geographical location between rolling hills and the Danubian Lowland provides the framework for its character. Road II/504 also helps with geographical orientation. In the Piešťany District, it runs through Veľké Kostoľany, Dubovany, Veselé, Rakovice, Borovce, Trebatice and Krakovany.

A special, rather unusual facet of local life is represented by the RC Klub Veselé. The club builds radio-controlled aircraft models and meets in suitable areas around the municipality; its models can often be seen there. In addition, basket weaving, or Košikárstvo, was a supplementary occupation in Veselé. These two details tell different parts of the village’s history: one concerns a present-day community activity, the other a former source of income.

Church, chapel and historical evidence

The Baroque Church of Saint Bartholomew stands at the centre of the village’s history. It was built from 1736 to 1743 on the site of an older religious building. In 1925, it was restored and expanded into a three-nave church by adding two side aisles. The Veselské hody are celebrated on the feast of Saint Bartholomew, who is regarded as the patron saint of the parish church and the parish.

The garden of the rectory contains Baroque stone statues of Saint Florian and Saint Wendelin dating from the 18th century. Another religious site is the family chapel of the Škublič family. It is dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross; Masses are occasionally held there. The historical character of the village is further complemented by the listed Folk House at Veselé 93. The single-storey building is the birthplace of Bishop Štefan Moyses and was built in the second half of the 18th century.

Veselé also documents its older settlement history. At the Hradisko-Podzámske site, traces of settlement were concentrated within an early Bronze Age fortification. An archaeological investigation at the Hradisko site also confirmed the existence of a medieval castle complex dating from the 11th to the 15th century. These details refer to historical findings and structures; they should not automatically be equated with a sightseeing attraction accessible today.

Festivals and local culture

The Veselské hody are a recurring local celebration documented for 2024 and 2025. Its programme combines food and grilling with dance music, family activities and football. The programme of the 2024 Veselské hody took place at the Veselé football stadium, at Pizzeria U Kováča and in the village centre. The documented venues are therefore spread across different parts of the village rather than being limited to a single festival site.

Another event is the Veselská guláš párty. This is an event centred on cooking goulash; the 16th edition was announced for 11 July 2026. The date therefore belongs to a specific announcement and is not a general reference to a permanently current events calendar.

Veselé is also connected with Štefan Moyses, an important figure in Slovak history. He was born in Veselé in 1797 and was chairman of Matica slovenská on 3 August 1863.
