Trnava: Experience a Historic City and Its Culture

Trnava combines a historic center with distinctive buildings, museums, and contemporary art. Since 1987, its historic center has been an urban monument reserve. The city offers several different ways to explore its history on a city break: from the fortifications and Renaissance town tower to churches, collections, and exhibitions. Fortifications and the Town Tower

Trnava’s city fortifications are the oldest, longest, and best-preserved city fortifications in Slovakia. Churches and Musical Heritage

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is Slovakia’s first early Baroque building. Inside is an original wooden main altar dating from 1640. The architecture and altar highlight different historical periods: the building represents the early Baroque period, while the dated original piece provides a specific link to the 17th century.

The Basilica of St. Nicholas served as the cathedral church of the Archbishop of Esztergom from 1543 to 1820. Today, it is a center of religious and cultural life in Trnava. The international Organ Days are held at the basilica every year around the turn of August and September. Another art venue is the former Neolog Synagogue at 2 Halenárska Street, which has served as a contemporary art center since June 1994. The Emmerova Villa offers a different perspective on the built heritage: it dates from around 1770, is Trnava’s oldest surviving summer house, and is a national cultural monument.

The House of Music has a permanent exhibition on the life and work of Mikuláš Schneider Trnavský. Along with visual art and book exhibitions, it adds music history to the cultural program. Getting Around and Arriving
