Trstín – Cultural History at the Foot of the Little Carpathians

Trstín combines the landscape at the eastern foot of the Little Carpathians with a rich cultural history. The town developed along a historic trade route through the Little Carpathians from Bohemia to Hungary. Today, when planning your trip, you can choose between religious sites, historic manor houses, an educational trail and remarkable evidence of industrial history.

Pilgrimage, Churches and Calvary

An important point of reference is Hájiček. The brick Church of the Seven Sorrows of Mary was built around the middle of the 13th century and belongs to the Hájiček pilgrimage site. Every year, a pilgrimage to the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary takes place there on the Sunday around 15 August. If you plan your trip for this period, you will experience Trstín in an explicitly religious context.

The parish Church of St Peter and Paul is also part of the local architectural history. It was built in the middle of the 18th century and houses a crypt belonging to the Pongrác and Motešický families, who are named as patrons of the church. For a cultural and historical perspective, this church building can be viewed together with the Trstínska kalvária. The site lies northeast of Trstín at the foot of the Little Carpathians and is one of the few calvary complexes in Slovakia built between the two world wars. Fourteen Stations of the Cross in the form of stelae with reliefs are arranged in a circle around a six-part Crucifixion group.

Manor House, Château and Places of Remembrance

The Renaissance manor house in Trstín is attributed to the Motešický family. It was a fortified estate with economic and defensive functions. A cartouche on the chimney dates the construction to 5 August 1685 and its reconstruction to 15 August 1792. These specific dates make the site particularly interesting for travellers who want to understand architectural history not only through historical periods but also through individual fixed points in time.

The Baroque château in Trstín was built in the middle of the 18th century. Several plane trees, birches and maple trees have survived from the former English park. The historic park should therefore not be understood as a fully preserved complex; however, the remaining trees form part of the château's traditional surroundings. The Ambroziánum memorial room is open to the public. You can obtain the keys from the Trstín municipal office or the parish office.

Another distinctive feature is the Orenstein and Koppel 7260/1915 steam locomotive, which is located in Trstín. It was used on construction railways and later also by sugar factories. For those interested in the history of technology and industry, it adds a completely different aspect of the region's past to the religious and aristocratic heritage.

Educational Trail and Geological Feature

The Hájiček Educational Trail, Náučný chodník Hájiček, offers a practical way to combine your stay with a walking route. It includes 1.36 kilometres of paved or generally designated trail, as well as 0.93 kilometres of unpaved path. Take both types of route into account when planning and organise your day according to your personal preferences.

Vodná priepasť lies directly in the Trstín quarry. An underground lake 10 metres long and 3 metres deep fills the floor of its entrance fissure. The entrance was later fitted with a grille and filled in during subsequent quarrying work.

The various sites offer different focal points: Hájiček and the calvary complex represent religious culture, the church and the connection with the landscape; the manor house and château represent the history of local rule, while the educational trail, quarry and locomotive open up further perspectives.
