Svätoplukovo: Churches, Monuments and Landscape
Accommodation in Svätoplukovo
Svätoplukovo brings together several centuries of church and commemorative history in a setting where farmland and vineyards predominate. Its highlights include two churches with different architectural classifications, monuments with specific dates of origin, and a landscape crossed by two streams. This makes it a culturally distinctive destination for your trip, with local character revealed through its buildings, history and surroundings.
Churches and Architectural History
The Kostol Ružencovej Panny Márie church is Neoclassical and was built between 1833 and 1892. The Evangelical church in Svätoplukovo is Late Neoclassical: it was built in 1861 and extended in 1934. Their building histories therefore differ both in their chronology and in their architectural classification. If you are interested in church architecture, these two aspects can be explored side by side in Svätoplukovo.
The Evangelical church has a hall-like interior with flat ceilings, a three-sided termination and a built-in tower. If you pay attention to spatial form, you will find specific architectural details here alongside the stylistic classification. Both churches are in good condition and serve their religious purpose. Check local access before visiting.
Monuments and Historical Dates
The first written mention of Svätoplukovo dates from 1386. Other historical dates are marked by monuments in the village: the Morový kríž dates from 1886 and was restored in 1986. The Trojičné súsošie, a Trinity group, was erected on the grounds of the Catholic church in 1890. The cross and the Trinity group were created just four years apart; the cross was restored a century after its creation.
The Socha sv. Urbanka statue dates from 1895 and stands by the municipal vineyards. A war memorial commemorates the citizens of Svätoplukovo who fell as soldiers in the First and Second World Wars. The monuments thus represent different forms of remembrance: named structures and sculptures with their own dates, as well as a tribute to the fallen citizens.
Landscape and Water
Farmland and vineyards predominate in the cadastral area of Svätoplukovo; two forests make up a small part of it. The Mlynský potok and Cedron streams are also part of the local landscape: both flow through Svätoplukovo. Alongside the churches and monuments, agricultural land, vineyards, forests and waterways shape the character of the area.
Two artesian wells add to these local features. One was drilled in 1909 and the other in 1973; they reach depths of up to 130 metres. The different drilling years give each well its own historical date, while their depth is another feature of the local infrastructure.
A Local Perspective Through the Library
The Obecná knižnica public library offers another cultural perspective. It is located in the post office building and welcomes new readers. Its collection includes more than 3,300 books, with non-fiction and fiction available for adults and children. If you would like to learn about the community’s reading resources as well as its churches and monuments, the library offers another point of interest during your stay.
