Podhorany: Cultural Monuments, Trails and Natural Areas

Podhorany is a destination for travelers who want to explore Slovak local history not only through a single building, but through several clearly distinguishable traces. In the village district of Sokolníky, the range extends from an archaeological site documented in writing since 1113 to a Baroque-Classical parish church dating from 1758. This cultural focus is complemented by marked trails in the municipality and the natural area of Malý Bahorec in the cadastral territory of Sokolníky.

Archaeological and Sacred Traces in Sokolníky

The Hríb archaeological site in Sokolníky includes a settlement from prehistoric times and the Middle Ages, including finds from the 11th to 12th centuries. Sokolníky itself has been documented in writing since 1113 and is designated as an archaeological site. The historical classification of the village district therefore extends well beyond individual surviving buildings.

A particularly clearly identifiable stop is located beside the field path to State Road 593: this is where the preserved foundations of the vanished Church of Saint Michael can be found. The site has an information board and is freely accessible to the public. The foundations are listed as a national cultural monument under registration number ÚZPF 1523/1; their irregular single-nave floor plan has been preserved. This vanished church should be distinguished from the Parish Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Sokolníky. It is a local heritage site, Baroque-Classical in style, and dates from 1758. It was altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Hrádok is also located in Sokolníky and is a medieval national cultural monument under registration number ÚZPF 1524/1.

Manor Houses, Monuments and Local Memory

The Kúria Kochanovských manor complex is a Neoclassical national cultural monument from the beginning of the 18th century with an L-shaped floor plan. The Katscherovcov Villa and its garden is likewise a prominent historic property, designated as a Historicist national cultural monument from the beginning of the 20th century; it also has an L-shaped floor plan.

Further evidence is distributed across different periods and forms. The statue of Saint Florian with its pedestal is a national cultural monument from 1653 in the vernacular Baroque style. Sokolníky’s local heritage also includes a cross erected to commemorate the end of the First World War in 1918. There is also a statue of Saint Joseph with relics of saints from the mid-18th century. The old cemetery in Sokolníky contains remains of a vanished sacred building and a cemetery.

Marked Trails and Orientation in the Municipality

For active exploration, the municipality of Podhorany has a tourist trail junction beneath the 88.9-meter-long railway viaduct. Blue- and yellow-marked trails meet here. The blue-marked trail toward Štitáre is called “Zarneckého chodník.” Signposts also lead to the Hôrka viewpoint and the Horná studňa spring. The municipality also has a terminal stop for regional bus services.

Malý Bahorec: A Designated Natural Area

Malý Bahorec is located in the cadastral territory of Sokolníky and is designated as a site of European importance under code SKUEV0877. The protected area covers 6.00 hectares. The stated basis for protection is the presence of dry-loving grassland and herbaceous communities of European importance, as well as sub-Pannonian grasslands on calcareous ground. Malý Bahorec is also home to one of the largest populations of the green-winged orchid (Anacamptis morio) within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area. This gives you a precise picture for planning your trip: Podhorany combines archaeological and sacred heritage, signposts to specific destinations and a clearly defined natural area.
