Žirany between Pass Landscape and Cultural Heritage

Žirany is located in the Žirany Pass at an elevation of 251 m, in the headwaters of the Hunták and Bocegaj streams. The Žibrica Nature Reserve, covering 68.59 ha, lies in the surroundings of the village on the southern slopes and ridge of Žibrica. It represents a forest-steppe landscape and thermophilous deciduous forests on limestone bedrock. Here, you can combine orientation in a Slovak landscape with visible traces of local history, marked paths and individual cultural sites.

Museum, Chapels and Preserved Houses

The cultural introduction begins at the Žirany Municipal Museum. It was established from an extension to a former shop and its storage area and ceremonially opened on 11 December 1977. Several chapels form part of the village landscape: the Chapel of Saint Urban in the vineyards was built in 1795, the Chapel of Saint Vendelin dates from 1912, and the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1843. A stone cross dating from 1823 stands near the road in the parish courtyard.

The history of the church can also be clearly traced over time. Žirany had a Baroque church dating from 1734; the present church building was newly constructed in 1938–1939. Preserved adobe houses with three rooms and hipped roofs can also be seen. The Žirany folk house, also called a tájház, houses an exhibition on folk culture. Visits to the folk house must be arranged in advance. The vestibule of the Žirany cultural centre also contains a memorial plaque.

Paths, Limestone and Landscape

The history of the village also extends to the use of its limestone bedrock. In Žirany, the hand quarrying of limestone and the production of quicklime in simple kilns on the eastern slopes of Vápenník and Žibrica have been documented since the 17th century. A written record from 1379 also confirms that the Esztergom Chapter established the right to import wine from Žirany. This historical reference complements the visible evidence of the village without making any statement about present-day offerings.

Two named connections are particularly relevant for route orientation. The red-marked Ponitrianska magistrála passes through Žirany. The Kostoliansky educational trail between Gýmeš and Kostolianske lúky has stops 32, 33 and 34 in Žirany. In the same local setting, you therefore encounter both a long-distance marked route and an educational trail with designated stations.

Practical Orientation for Your Stay

Žirany is accessible by regional bus services; parking is also available. The leisure centre includes an amphitheatre, a traffic training area, swings, a slide, two tennis courts, a volleyball court and a concrete surface for mini-football. If you would like to visit the Žirany folk house, arrange your visit in advance. This allows cultural sites, paths and the leisure centre to be considered separately when planning your stay, without combining them into a single attraction.
