Rumanová: Castle Park, Chapel and Meteorite Educational Trail

Rumanová combines historic buildings with an accessible natural and cultural experience. The main attractions are the castle with its park, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Meteorite Educational Trail. This picture is complemented by a stone cross at the cadastral boundary and a national cultural monument in the local cemetery. For a journey through Slovakia, this creates a place where history, architecture and a self-guided walk along clearly defined points of interest can be discovered.

Castle and Protected Park

The castle and park in Rumanová are the oldest surviving architectural object in Rumanová. The castle was first mentioned in a written source in 1663. As a building, it belongs to late Classicism: the Andrássy family had the late Classicist building constructed in the first half of the 19th century. The history of the site thus extends from a written mention in the 17th century to a clearly identifiable construction phase in the 19th century.

The park by the castle is currently used by residents, locals and visitors for recreation, relaxation and sporting activities. The protected landscape area of Rumanovský park was designated in 1982 to protect the historic park by the castle.

Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary

A second prominent landmark lies in the centre of Rumanová. The Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary stands as a freestanding building on slightly elevated ground. Its construction history comprises several clearly defined phases: originally, it was a Baroque chapel built without a tower in the first half of the 18th century. An integrated tower was added in 1900.

The architecture also makes the chapel a destination in its own right within the town. It is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse and a flat interior ceiling. The tower is topped with an onion dome.

Other Monuments in the Townscape

The Rumanová–Báb stone cross stands at the cadastral boundary next to the state road and was erected in 1790. The local cemetery also contains a grave with a gravestone (ÚZPF 1534/0). It is a national cultural monument dating from 1920. Both places broaden the historical perspective beyond the castle and chapel: the cross is connected with a boundary and a transport route, while the grave has its place within the local cemetery.

Meteorite Educational Trail

Those who would like to plan a short hike alongside the cultural monuments will find a clearly described route in the Meteorite Educational Trail. The trail is self-guided, linear, can be walked in either direction and is open year-round. Its focus is natural history, astronomy and cultural history. The easy route is 1.4 km long, takes one hour to walk and includes three stations.

The route begins at the statue of Saint Vendelín on the northern edge of Rumanová. From there, the educational trail follows a field road north to the Mikloš area with a pond. At the same time, the two possible focuses of a visit differ clearly: the monuments concentrate on architectural history and the townscape, while the educational trail brings together natural-history, astronomical and cultural-history topics along a linear route.
