Mojmírovce – Castle, Museum and Wine

If you are considering Mojmírovce as a destination in Slovakia, the town represents several facets: castle history, regional wine culture and unusual collections. The historic buildings tell stories of aristocratic architecture and local craftsmanship, while viticulture, with its own vineyards and a tasting room, adds a clearly recognizable culinary dimension.

Castle, Church and Regional History

The most important historical landmark is Mojmírovce Castle. Imrich Huňady had it built in the Baroque style in 1721. After a fire, the building was later remodeled in the Neoclassical style. Thus, a single building presents two clearly identifiable architectural phases: its Baroque foundation and the later Neoclassical transformation.

The Mojmírovce Regional Museum is also housed in a historic building. It is located in the renovated summer residence of Prince Aldobrandini, which is also called the “small castle.” The museum preserves 305 rare old prints. In the park by the museum there are also ghost sculptures designed around motifs from local legends. This area therefore combines architectural history, historical collections and motifs from local tradition, without the individual themes merging into a single attraction.

Sacred architecture includes the Church of Saint Ladislaus. It was commissioned by the local landowner Ladislav Huňady, who brought craftsmen from Vienna for the project. Another aspect of the local past is represented by the mill in Mojmírovce: it retains most of its original technical equipment from 1926. Thus, in addition to representative buildings, the townscape includes sacred architecture and historic technical equipment.

Winegrowing with Its Own Provenance

A vaulted brick wine cellar is located in Mojmírovce Castle. The vineyards of Víno PD Mojmírovce currently cover 133 hectares. The winery uses exclusively grapes from its own vineyards. This statement clearly describes the origin of the grapes used and distinguishes them from a range assembled from various external growing areas.

Visitors can taste the winery’s products in the tasting room of Víno PD Mojmírovce. In addition, Mojmírovce holds an annual wine tasting in the spring at the cultural center. For your travel planning, you should consider these two formats separately: the tasting at the winery and the event at the cultural center are not the same offering.

Another historical reference concerns Urmín: it is recorded that the first public horse races in Austria-Hungary took place there in 1814. The year clearly anchors this statement in history. Together with the castle, church, museum and mill, this creates a townscape in which different chapters of the past are visible side by side, while winegrowing adds a contemporary regional dimension.
