Hruboňovo – Travel, Water and History
Accommodation in Hruboňovo
Hruboňovo offers several concrete points of interest for a trip: bus services, the Perkovský potok and traces of history. The reservoir in Výčapky and an inclusively designed playground project offer additional topics to explore. When choosing where to stay, travel connections are a sensible first point to check; afterwards, you can decide whether water, local history or a child-focused project is the deciding factor.
Getting to Hruboňovo
Bus services connect Hruboňovo. The nearest railway station is in Zbehy, about 12 km away. The bus connection and the railway station are therefore two different reference points for getting there. Check the bus timetable if you want to use this connection. If you are planning an overnight stay in Hruboňovo, factor in the bus timetable and the location of the station in Zbehy.
Water and recreation
The Perkovský potok flows through Hruboňovo. The Hruboňovo reservoir is in the northern part of Výčapky and is a place for short-term recreation. It is accessible only from the village; there is no path along the water. If you include the reservoir in your travel plans, take its access arrangements into account.
Culture and history
A Roman coin found in Hruboňovo may now be held in the collection of either the Archaeological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences or the Slovak Agricultural Museum in Nitra. The uncertainty about its current place of safekeeping is part of this historical trace.
The Second World War also left a specific mark: an American Mustang fighter aircraft crashed in Hruboňovo in 1944. Parts of the aircraft and its engine are on display at the Apponyi Hunting Lodge Museum in Oponice; the museum is outside Hruboňovo.
Kaštieľ Výčapky is a two-storey Baroque-Classical manor house. It is dated to the mid-18th century, although the late 17th century is also given in some accounts. In Výčapky, on the main road, there is also a preserved and well-maintained chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, about 200 years old. The chapel contains a sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding the dead Christ in her arms.
The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is a visible cultural monument, surrounded by a triangular metal railing made around 1791. Beneath the preserved foundations of the Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel are crypts containing the coffins of local landowners.
Playground and local traditions
The “Ihrisko pre každé dieťa” (A Playground for Every Child) multigenerational playground project in Výčapky is designed for children with and without disabilities and comprises eleven elements. This offers a clear distinction when choosing a topic: the project is child-focused, while the chapels and monuments appeal to historical interests.
Traditional events in Hruboňovo include a Shrovetide gathering marking the symbolic burial of the double bass and an exhibition of fruit and vegetables. If you are travelling specifically for an event, check the date in advance.
