Vráble – Winegrowing, City History and Culture

Vráble combines a winemaking tradition that has developed over centuries with urban history, archaeological traces and small cultural sites in the surrounding districts. Winegrowing and Regional Festivals

Vráble has been a winegrowing region for several centuries. This focus is also reflected in the Vrábeľské slávnosti vinobrania, which take place every year. The celebrations begin with a parade accompanied by singing and music from local folklore groups. During the Otvorené vrábeľské pivnice, more than 40 local winemakers open their wine cellars, where visitors can taste their wines. Alongside exploring the historic city, this places an explicitly regional wine culture at the centre of the experience.

City Museum in the Stoličný dom

A good starting point for exploring the city’s history is the City Museum in the Stoličný dom, Hlavná 170/33, 952 01 Vráble. The building later known as the Stoličný dom was constructed in 1831–1832 as the Stoličný úrad. The building also houses the so-called Vrábeľská izba. The exhibitions in the Stoličný dom are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 14:00 and on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 17:00.

Archaeology and Historic Buildings

South of Vráble lies the Fidvár archaeological site, in fertile fields locally known as Fidvár. By the end of 2018, Fidvár had been declared a national cultural monument of Slovakia. The remains of the Baroque tower of an older church, uncovered next to the church during archaeological investigations, offer further insight into the area’s earlier architectural history.

Smaller historic structures include Božia muka, also known as Vendelínko, in the Horný Ohaj district. It is a Neoclassical wayside chapel from the first half of the 19th century. The church grounds also contain the Súsošie kalvárie, a Late Baroque sandstone group dating from 1768. In Dolné Prédium stands the Kaplnka sv. Urbana, a Neoclassical chapel dating from 1813. The Jewish cemetery on Družstevná ulica was established at the end of the 19th century.

Traditions, Milling History and Trails in the Surrounding Area

In the Horný Ohaj district, the Dom ľudových tradícií houses a permanent exhibition on traditional living as well as various exhibits. The Požitavské múzeum mlynárstva – Mašekov mlyn was established in 2004 on an old farmstead beside the Žitava River. Its collection includes historic millstones. It also displays native regional animal species that lived in this area at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Marked hiking trails in the area around Vráble provide a way to combine culture with physical activity. You can therefore combine visits to museums, churches and historic sites with a walk without reducing the character of the region to a single theme.
