A nature trail with a clearly defined route
The Vajkovská stará Žitava nature trail is a self-guided, linear footpath that can be walked in both directions and used year-round. It begins behind the Vajka nad Žitavou manor house and runs along the Žitava upstream to Horné lúky. The route is 1 km long, has no elevation gain and includes four stations. The complete route takes about 30 minutes. The nature trail therefore offers a precisely defined route in which the focus is not on a long hike, but on the combination of the river course, the stations and the history of the area.
A spring, chapels and the route to Vajkovská Studnička
At Vajkovská Studnička, a spring rises on a gentle slope. This area includes a stone well, a chapel, planted green spaces, an ornamental pond, benches, a fire pit and an information board. The site is also described as a “lost” pilgrimage site. This designation should be understood as a name for the place; it says nothing about any present-day pilgrimage activity.
Vajkovská Studnička can be reached at the beginning of Vajky nad Žitavou, in the Lúčnica district. The path leads from the direction of Dyčka across the railway line and along the stream to the chapels and the spring. This makes it possible to understand the spring not only as an individual point, but also in connection with the route area described and the existing features.
Individual historic buildings and their history
The Chapel of Panny Márie Šaštínskej dates from 1733. The Vajka nad Žitavou manor house is a late Baroque, single-storey building from the mid-18th century with an H-shaped floor plan. The manor house was surrounded by an extensive 18th-century park. The manor house is abandoned and falling into disrepair. The historic fabric therefore includes both architectural features and an explicitly documented condition that forms part of the building's overall context.
The Ferencyho mlyn pri kaštieli is an originally Baroque mill building that probably dates from the mid-18th century. The mill was reconstructed in 2010, with its essential elements preserved. The Church of sv. Jána Nepomuckého reflects a different historical development: it is a late Baroque church from the mid-18th century, was extended with side aisles in 1911 and remodelled in the 1950s. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.
