Veľké Zálužie: Culture, Castle Park and Cycling

Veľké Zálužie combines a long local history with tangible opportunities for culture and cycling enthusiasts. The municipality is located in the Nitrianska pahorkatina, which belongs to the larger Podunajská pahorkatina landscape unit. Its settlement history dates back to the Neolithic period: the area was already inhabited around 5000 BC. Until the end of the 19th century, Veľké Zálužie developed as a small village with a toll station.

Church, Marian Column and Castle

One of the notable historical points of reference is the Marian Column from 1753. The Baroque column bears a statue of the Immaculate Conception and has been listed as a national cultural monument under number 1565/1-2 since 1963. Veľké Zálužie is therefore home to a single monument in which architectural form, religious art and heritage protection status are directly combined.

The Roman Catholic parish church was built in 1769 in the Baroque-Classical style and is dedicated to All Saints. It underwent extensive restoration between 2003 and 2005. The main altar dedicated to All Saints, dating from the late 18th century, was reconstructed and is once again serving its purpose. The church interior contains sculptures of Saint Joseph, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Nicholas, Saint Ambrose, Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Beneath the church is a crypt where local counts are buried.

The castle, too, represents the historical development of the village. The Forgách family built it as their family residence. The building was constructed in the Empire style at the beginning of the 19th century on older foundations. Its U-shaped floor plan and two storeys give the building a clearly recognizable architectural form.

Castle Park and Outdoor Activities

The castle park currently covers 9 hectares. It was laid out in the style of a natural landscape park with numerous gravel paths; the area is designated as a protected natural monument. The park thus complements the historic buildings with a landscape setting whose design is focused not on regular garden forms but on the character of a natural park.

For active days, the blue cycling route passes through Veľké Zálužie. The village also has a Cyklopark on the grounds of the sports club. It is open around the clock and free to access. The facilities include a paved pump track that can be used with bicycles, scooters, skateboards, longboards and roller skates. There is also a free e-bike charging station on the CTVZ grounds, which is likewise available around the clock.
