Nitra between Castle, Culture and the Zobor Mountains

In Nitra, historic buildings, museums and cultural events meet marked trails in the Zobor Mountains. If you would like to combine city sightseeing with scenery and panoramic views on your trip to Slovakia, the city offers several clearly distinct options: Nitra Castle with its fortifications, the Nitra Synagogue and the Ponitrianske Museum contrast with a route to Hradisko Zobor, the ascent to Pyramída and family-oriented attractions in Mestský park na Sihoti.

Marked Trails at Hradisko Zobor

Hradisko Zobor is a national cultural monument. The site covers approximately 18 hectares and extends across four cadastral areas. A red-marked hiking route leads to the western gate of Hradisko Zobor. In the Zobor Mountains, there is also a path along a yellow-marked route to Pyramída. The approximately one-hour ascent offers views of Nitra and, in favourable weather, the surrounding area.

For a more detailed exploration of the landscape and regional history, there is an educational trail in the Zobor Mountains. It comprises 27 stations and is 14.7 kilometres long overall. In the Zobor Mountains, you can also visit the ruins of Zobor Monastery; the monastery is described as the oldest monastery in Slovakia. The different types of routes make it clear whether you want to focus on a single marked connection, an ascent with panoramic views or a longer educational trail.

Castles, Religious Buildings and Collections

Nitra Castle and its fortifications form the largest medieval fortified settlement. On the grounds, you can visit the Cathedral of St Emeram, the casemates, the Vazul Tower and the Diocesan Museum. Nitra Castle is accessible by car; from Župný dom, the walk takes approximately 15 minutes.

The Nitra Synagogue is a freestanding building in the Moorish-Byzantine style in the city centre and was completed in September 1911. It primarily serves as a concert and exhibition hall for chamber concerts, theatre performances, literary evenings and exhibitions. Alongside the castle complex, this provides another cultural venue, whose present-day use is shaped by events and exhibitions.

At the Ponitrianske Museum, the exhibition “Skvosty dávnovekého Slovenska” presents more than 2,000 archaeological objects. They are arranged chronologically from the Palaeolithic to the modern era. A permanent exhibition at the same museum presents the fauna of the Tribeč region, particularly in the districts of Nitra and Zlaté Moravce, and showcases the biological diversity of the area’s animal life.

Further Cultural Experiences

The Slovak Agricultural Museum in Nitra is an open-air museum dedicated to the history of agriculture in Slovakia. It also offers rides on a narrow-gauge steam railway around its open-air museum. The Calvary of Nitra comprises twelve chapels and offers views across the entire city. You can also visit the Mission Museum there.

For families, Mestský park na Sihoti features children’s attractions, playgrounds, slides, a maze, a farm and a historic frog fountain. The International Theatre Festival Divadelná Nitra provides a seasonal cultural highlight: Nitra regularly hosts it in September. From 1 June to 31 August, the tourist train from Nitra also runs between Svätoplukovo Square and Pribina Square below Nitra Castle.
