Nitra combines striking cultural monuments with landscape experiences around Zobor. Nitra Castle is a national cultural monument and a natural focal point for exploring the history of the town. At the same time, the castle moat offers its own visitor experience: the Gothic castle moat is used as a summer amphitheater. During the summer months, film screenings and concerts take place there in the open air. This area is freely accessible to all visitors.
Cultural monuments between the castle and the city
The Calvary in Nitra is also clearly structured and can be explored as an independent cultural site. It comprises twelve Neo-Romanesque chapels representing the Stations of the Cross, arranged along a path leading to the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. Another striking building is the synagogue in Nitra. It is a freestanding building in the Moorish-Byzantine style, completed in September 1911. The synagogue primarily serves as a concert and exhibition hall.
The Church of St. Michael the Archangel stands in Dražovce. It is a Romanesque church from the 11th century and is one of the oldest sacred buildings in Slovakia. Zobor offers an even older historical connection: in the 9th century, the Benedictine Monastery of St. Hippolytus was founded there as the first monastery in what is now Slovakia. From the 11th to the 14th century, Zobor Monastery served as a religious, public-law and cultural center. The monastery's later role as a center extends beyond its foundation in the 9th century.
Zobor: Panorama, educational trail and nature reserve
The Pyramída (553 m) subpeak of Zobor offers panoramic views of Nitra and the surrounding area. The elevation of 553 m refers to the Pyramída subpeak, not to the summit of Zobor. In the forest around the summit, the stone walls of a prehistoric settlement from the Late Bronze Age are still visible. Zobor therefore combines the landscape with visible traces of earlier settlement, without reducing either theme to a single period.
The Zoborské vrchy educational trail, with 27 stations, helps visitors find their way around the mountain. The starting point of the basic circular route to the summit of Zobor and back is at the Zobor Health Institute. This starting point can be reached by city bus routes 1, 9 and 25. One station along the educational trail is the Zoborská lesostep National Nature Reserve. Fourteen protected plant species occur there. This means the route can be viewed not only from a landscape perspective, but also from a natural-history perspective.
