Prievidza: Castles, Educational Trails and Thermal Baths

Prievidza combines impressive cultural sites with educational trails, wooded mountain landscapes and opportunities for water recreation. Particularly characteristic is the contrast between Bojnice Castle on a travertine hill above the town of Bojnice, Handlová’s mining history and the hiking trails in the Vtáčnik Mountains. The region therefore offers different reasons to travel: you can explore historic interiors and a natural cave, choose a self-guided educational trail or compare water and winter sports.

Bojnice Castle, Zoo and Regional Culture

The first written mention of Bojnice Castle dates back to 1113. The castle houses an art history museum with nationwide jurisdiction. The castle and cave tour is guided and supplemented by expert explanations; it lasts 75 to 90 minutes. The cave directly beneath the castle is a natural travertine cave and provides a geological complement to the historic site.

Bojnice Zoo also focuses on different forms of interpretation. Its route leads through wooded areas and, in places, through original Carpathian forest. The zoo includes a children’s petting zoo, which has existed since 2005. A sensory trail combines different surfaces with information panels about Carpathian wildlife. This means that the zoo visit can be experienced not only through observing animals, but also through the landscape and accessible information.

The Hornonitrianske Museum was established in Prievidza on 1 January 1985. This cultural and educational institution is dedicated to protecting cultural heritage. In Handlová, a tourist mining educational trail provides insights into coal-mining activities as well as the fauna and flora of the surrounding area. The mining history also includes Banícka kolónia: it was built as a residential district for miners who came to work from throughout the former monarchy. The main construction phase lasted from 1909 to 1928; during this period, 149 workers’ houses were built.

Another testimony to the region’s infrastructure is the Bralský Tunnel. The railway tunnel is 3.0116 kilometres long and forms part of a railway line built towards Turiec in the late 1920s and early 1930s. At the Upper Nitra Open-Air Mining Museum in Sebedražie, the underground tour travels below ground on a typical mine railway.

Educational Trails in the Vtáčnik Mountains and Routes for Active Days

The Prievidza District offers educational trails with clearly different levels of difficulty. The Buchlov educational trail is 5.3 kilometres long, self-guided and equipped with eight stations. The Vtáčnik educational trail is 7.8 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 900 metres and takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. The time indication remains an approximate guide. Part of the Prievidza District belongs to the Vtáčnik Mountains, whose landscape is characterised by beech stands as well as mixed beech and fir stands.

The Fraňo Madva educational trail combines natural history and regional history. It provides information about the animal and plant life, the geology of the region, and the life and work of Fraňo Madva. The route is 12 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 600 metres. Information panels are located in the Prievidza District along hiking trails, used forest roads and on summits in nature reserves, near monuments and in protected areas of upper Ponitrie, including the Vtáčnik area.

Cyclists can also find a documented route: the Nedožery–Brezany–Malá Čausa–Chrenovec–Jalovec–Ráztočno–Remata route is 11.6 kilometres long and ends in Remata. For winter activities, the Ski TMG Remata ski resort is described as having a 500-metre-long ski slope and an elevation difference of 90 metres. It has children’s lifts and ski lessons. A railway station is located at the Remata resort, 400 metres from the accommodation.

Thermal Baths and Water Recreation

Chalmová Thermal Baths are open year-round and have indoor pools for regeneration as well as outdoor pools for swimming. The Nitrianske Rudno Reservoir is one of the water-recreation destinations in the Horná Nitra–Bojnice destination. Swimming, boating, sailing, windsurfing, pedal boating and fishing are possible there. The two options therefore differ clearly: Chalmová combines indoor and outdoor pools, while Nitrianske Rudno offers various activities on and by the water.
