Discover Handlová: Culture, Mining History and Trails to the Grič Peaks

Handlová combines the history of the Carpathian Germans, the memory of coal mining and marked trails with views over the town. If you are looking for a place with a clearly recognizable cultural and historical profile for your trip to Slovakia, several different paths lead through Handlová: from an exhibition and a church dating from the 14th century to an educational trail accessible year-round.

Cultural History and Mining in One Place

The “Dejiny a kultúra Handlovej” exhibition presents the history and culture of the Germans living in Handlová. Using archaeological artifacts, it introduces visitors to the history of the Carpathian Germans in Handlová. Another section covers the history of coal mining from the beginnings of industrial mining in 1909 to 1945. Mining tools document the mining of lignite.

Another perspective on this heritage is offered by the Slovenské Banské Múzeum Handlová. There, visitors can experience a replica of underground spaces with displays of coal mining methods, from manual techniques to mechanized mining from the beginning of the 20th century. The museum is housed in a renovated building from 1913 that originally served as a miners’ hotel. The facility also includes the so-called EKO dielnička. It provides space for extracurricular education, meaningful creative leisure activities and creative activities for all age groups.

Church and Miners’ Colony

The Kostol sv. Kataríny Alexandrijskej church dates from the mid-14th century and is considered the oldest building in Handlová. It therefore represents an older historical layer than the industrial development documented in the exhibition and mining museum. The Banícka kolónia, in turn, was built as a residential district for miners from across the former monarchy who came to Handlová to work.

Educational Trail and Routes to the Grič Peaks

The Banský náučný chodník is accessible year-round. The green-marked trail connects with a yellow-marked trail to the summit of Malý Grič and a red-marked trail to the summit of Veľký Grič. These peaks offer beautiful views of Handlová. Along the educational trail, you can also learn about activities related to coal mining in Handlová, as well as the fauna and flora of the surrounding area. In this way, the route combines nature observation with the history of mining.

Another described route is Cesta na Remäta. It begins at Námestie baníkov, follows the yellow-marked trail and passes the post office and the House of Services before reaching a car park. It then crosses a bridge over a stream and continues uphill along 1. mája Street to the municipal swimming pool, where it joins Pstruhárska Street. This provides a documented, specific route through the town for orientation.

Historic Railway Traces

The railway history is also part of Handlová’s story. The Bralský tunel, also known as Tunel T. G. Masaryka, is part of a railway line built toward Turiec in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The tunnel is 3.0116 km long. These details mark another historical dimension of the town without presenting the tunnel as a current excursion destination.
