Temeš: Hiking, Nature and Folk Traditions

Temeš combines a distinctive mountain setting with signposted hiking trails, cycling routes and cultural traditions. The village lies in the southern part of the Strážovská hornatina, in a deep, short, left-side valley of the Belanka stream. Forests account for 62% of Temeš’s non-agricultural area. If you are looking for a small place in Slovakia with specific opportunities for outdoor activities and cultural discoveries, Temeš offers several different starting points for this.

Hiking routes with clearly defined stages

The signposted hiking trail 8403 connects Temeš and Liešťany over 11.7 km. A short connecting trail, the signposted hiking trail 8403V, runs from Temešské sedlo to Temešská skala and is listed as 0.2 km long. This provides both a connection between two places and a short marked section leading to a distinctive landscape feature within the verified route network.

A longer hiking route through the Strážovské vrchy begins in Temeš and leads via Temešská skala, Malá Magura and Magura to Bojnice. The Temeš–Malá Magura–Bojnice route is listed as having a total elevation gain of 822 m. In addition, a hiking route from Temeš to Bojnice via Temešská skala and Malá Magura is listed as 18 km long.

Cycling also offers its own perspective. Cycling routes pass through Temeš; the Bojnický cyklookruh runs from Čavoj via Temeš to Nevidzany.

Temešská skala and the landscape

The Temešská skala protected area lies within the cadastral territories of Temeš and Čavoj and has the fifth level of protection. In addition, the Temešská skala European protected area includes land above the municipality of Čavoj. This land is intended to be preserved or kept free of woody overgrowth, particularly because of the occurrence of the rare, significant under European law, long-leaved fleabane, subspecies Tephroseris longifolia subsp. moravica. In Slovakia, this subspecies occurs at only a few known locations. The landscape area is therefore not only a destination on several hiking connections, but is also characterised by a specifically identified botanical feature.

Chapel and living heritage

The village is home to the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, built in 1926 in a delayed late-classical style. It is a single-nave building with a rectangular floor plan and an attached tower at the front. The chapel complements the nature and route themes with a clearly identifiable building from the village’s history.

The folklore group Košarinka, founded in 1999, is also part of Temeš’s cultural identity. Its repertoire includes folk games, customs, songs and dances. The members still perform in traditional costumes; some of these costumes are more than one hundred years old. Some of the women still master the techniques of sewing, embroidering and decorating traditional costumes.

The Day of Folk Traditions beneath Temešská skala was held annually in August by the municipality of Temeš. It brought together residents, people originally from Temeš and residents of other municipalities. At one edition, tasty culinary products from women from Temeš and hunters were offered throughout the day.
