Discover Nitrianske Pravno

Nitrianske Pravno combines a distinctive town centre with sacred architecture, regional culture and routes into the surrounding countryside. Those wishing to plan a stay with varied experiences will find an old town hall on the main square, the Calvary on Galgensberg, museums in historic buildings, as well as documented hiking and cycling routes.

Townscape and Sacred Buildings

On the main square, the old town hall is the characteristic and dominant building of Nitrianske Pravno. The Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist provides another historical accent. It was originally a stone Gothic church built in the first decades after the town was founded.

The Calvary is located on Galgensberg hill, a unique complex of 27 sacred buildings in the Neo-Gothic style. Fourteen chapels of the Stations of the Cross are connected there by a winding path. The upper part of the Calvary offers a view of the Upper Nitra Basin. The complex can therefore be experienced both through its architecture and its setting in the landscape.

Museums, Crafts and Regional History

The wooden bell tower stands in Vyšehradné. It was built in 1802, designated a national cultural monument in 1996, and is one of the oldest bell towers of its kind in Slovakia. In the Haronika House, the collection includes ceramic vessels, folk-art objects made of metal, wood, leather and textiles, as well as traditional costumes. Also located in the Haronika House in Vyšehradné are a small museum dedicated to housing and traditional clothing, and the “Keramika Haronika” ceramics workshop.

The Museum of the Carpathian Germans from Bratislava presents the permanent exhibition “History and Culture of the Carpathian Germans in Hauerland”. A prior telephone appointment is required to visit the museum. This specific arrangement is part of planning the visit if the exhibition is to be included in the travel itinerary.

Hiking and Cycling

The Solka–Vyšehrad educational trail is an approximately 8 km circular route of moderate difficulty. It has an elevation gain of 495 metres and takes about 3 to 4 hours at walking pace. In terms of content, the educational trail presents the history of this area as well as information about the local fauna and flora. The route therefore combines physical activity with historical and natural-history topics.

For more experienced cyclists, a cycling route begins in Nitrianske Pravno, leads via Tužina towards Temeš, and returns to Nitrianske Pravno via Handlová, Remata and Ráztočno. The route includes climbs to mountain passes as well as rides on paved and unpaved forest roads. Vyšehrad offers another historical dimension: it contains evidence of the oldest settlement from the Late Stone Age and the Late Bronze Age, as well as traces of Slavic settlement.
